Fungal problem on Duchesse de Brabant - need help, please
Comments (7)If the buds feel very slimy then it might be opportunistic botrytis. If not they have just balled. No rain needed for balling just very increased humidity and dew during the night and the 'right' attitude from the blooms... Some times a rose which does not easily ball may do that if unusually increased petal production, maybe due to fertilisation, coincides with the right humidity conditions. In any case the rose should be ok and will bloom nicely when the weather gets drier and warmer. Just get rid of those buds....See MoreWhy does my Duchesse de Brabant never look happy?
Comments (53)It sure is, Carol! I may need to get the deep irrigation stake thing, like Ingrid too. I think Strawchicago on the organic Roses forum has written about acidifying her water. I can't remember the results and need to check. I believe vinegar was one thing she tried. It would be nice if vinegar helped. At least it's cheap and can be bought by the gallon. Adding a bit in some water once in a while would be easy. At least for some roses that look to be struggling with the alkaline conditions. I'm not up to doing any constant or complicated regimens. I'm going to search for that old post. I'll post if I find anything good. Lisa...See MoreQuery: Mercury Rising, Duchesse de Brabant, Roald Dahl?
Comments (33)Vaporvac - yes -- I do mail order from Annie's (too often, I'm afraid). The shipping is expensive, but things always arrive healthy and well packed for me. One time the delivery truck delayed a day in the middle of a heatwave, and the poor plants fried in the truck, so Annie's re-sent all the ones I told them were damaged. I had sent photos to show them what I got. I ordered both Duchesse de Brabant and Grandmother's Hat last night. I'll stick them in pots and wait 'til next year to plant them in the garden, probably. Who knows, really. I seem to change my mind willy-nilly these days. I went out and bought a 2nd Princesse Charlene de Monaco at the last minute yesterday and put it in the spot where I had just dug up my Red Baron peach tree... I'm still waiting on my bare root Scentuous and Julie Andrews roses....See MoreDarker & clearer color on Duchesse de Brabant
Comments (10)Ooohhh...so pretty. I had to look it up on HMF to see other photos. You should really put your photos there, Jackie. Anyway, what I always look for in a Tea is the turned back "quilled"? petals as they age. I'm really not a fan of the pointy triangular shape they can become. But this one doesn't seem to do that. It seems to keep it's rounded shape. I see some turning back of petals, but it's pretty, not triangular. Another thing they mention is the powdery mildew. Jackie, your climate is similar to mine, I think. We tend to be about 10 degrees warmer in the winter than San Francisco, but don't get really hot in the summer. Except for the weird heat wave now and again, but we don't stay hot in the summer due to the "June Gloom". My question for you is how is the disease resistance for this one?...See Morecomtessedelacouche (10b S.Australia: hotdryMedclimate)
