Therma-Tru fiberglass door - any odor/offgassing?

Hi,

I am thinking of buying a Therma-Tru fiberglass door and was wondering if anybody has noticed an odor or have knowledge of off-gassing of voc's? I have a son who is sensitive to chemicals so I need to be careful in anything I put in the home. I am considering a wood door but I've heard that fiberglass doors are more stable the wanted to check in to the off-gassing before ordering.

Someone mentioned on another list that I might want to consider a door made by HomeGuard or HMI instead of Therma-Tru. Does anyone know about these doors and if they would be a better choice? Thanks!

I have never heard a complaint of any interior fumes of VOCs coming off of a door after install. Some of the interior caulking will have a slight scent to them and when the door gets hot on the exterior, you can get a slight scent associated with that surface. Never heard anything about the interior though.

The issue or regarding off gassing is complete and utter nonsense. Totally disregard that notion.

hmi , provia, and homeguard make very good doors.

I bought a very expensive Therna Tru front door with frosted side windows and the finish started to disintegrate on the door. That is because the sun hits it in the mornings and the finish just did not hold up and began to disintegrate and come off. First contacted Lowe's who I bought the door through and Lowe's passed me off to Therma Tru. Contacted Therma Tru and it started to weasel out of any responsibility on its 10 year warranty and gave me a hard time. I assume Therma Tru has had other problems with its wood look finish disintegrating. i am going to keep posting wherever and whenever I can about how Therma Tru does not honor its 10-year warranty on its expensive front doors. I am a service-connected totally disabled homebound Marine Corps veteran who paid over $5,000 for the Therma Tru front door. Well...it's my first time on this forum. My husband and I went through their warranties words by words and noticed something : "However, all bare or unprotected wood surfaces (such as door frames) on all steel and fiberglass Products (note: including any bare or unprotected wood surfaces used or exposed by builders, contractors, dealers or distributors on or in conjunction with the Products) should be primed and painted or stained and top coated within the lesser of 2 weeks of installation or exposure to weather." So does it mean that we need to paint over the hinge location? who paint the hinge area before installing the hinges? NO ONE does that. Anyway, we end up with PlastPro door and we are very happy with it. Plus, their door doesn't have the ugly screw hole around the glass like the old door.

Ksc36 - I disagree with you about the composite door jambs. Do you actually have a door with them? I drank the marketing Kool-aid when I ordered my new door, and chose the composite door jambs that replaced the 25-year-old wood door jambs. I am wondering if you did same. The wood jambs are heavier, feel solid. The composite door jambs feel light, and not solid. I should have realized that the composite door thing is a way for door companies to charge more for something that is much cheaper for them to manufacture, and so they made up a bunch of hooey to make people buy them. Sounds great in the brochures though. The owner of the door contracting company told me he has begun steering his customers away from the composite jambs now that he's had some experience with them.

Here is a long-running thread on Therma Tru doors. We have one 5 year old TT, and really like it. Tried to get a new one last year through a lumber yard dealer. It was a piece of junk! The re-ordered door was only slightly better, but we refused them both, and went with a different company. Just to let you know that HMI has a small geographical distribution, so may not be in your area. Provia doors are the best but their prices will literally take your breath away. HomeGuard very good and are also expensive but not stratospheric the way Provia is.

ThermaTru, while not at the quality of the 3 mentioned, are good, and there are many satisfied customers. To determine which is the better choice depends on what you want out of this door, your budget, how rough is your climate, how long you plan to live there, and the like.

Good feedback above. No worries about offgassing. Anything that you would experience would be consistent across manufacturers anyway.

Brands available will vary by region. Around here, provia, Homeguard, and Albany are top quality options.
