Provia versus Therma Tru fiberglass doors
Comments (8)coffeehaus - what type of "locking system" do you have? I didn't know Thermatru sold locksets - thought you always had to buy those separately. We have a Thermatru FiberClassic door. I ordered it prefinished but builder didn't. I stained it myself, didn't come out too badly except I should have worn a hairnet b/c I got hair in the stain and you can't touch up the door after the stain has dried. the few little spots I nicked I had to dab stain on with a toothpick, artist's brush didn't even work. Sorry, hadn't put the knob back on for this pic (was going to change HW but I have to interior side of door first - that's going to be a Honey Maple to match interior doors). Closeup of grain (with a piece of my interior trim - colors don't work together!)...See MoreIs PlasPro or any other fiberglass door comparable to ThermaTru?
Comments (32)Well...it's my first time on this forum. My husband and I went through their warranties words by words and noticed something : "However, all bare or unprotected wood surfaces (such as door frames) on all steel and fiberglass Products (note: including any bare or unprotected wood surfaces used or exposed by builders, contractors, dealers or distributors on or in conjunction with the Products) should be primed and painted or stained and top coated within the lesser of 2 weeks of installation or exposure to weather." So does it mean that we need to paint over the hinge location? who paint the hinge area before installing the hinges? NO ONE does that. Anyway, we end up with PlastPro door and we are very happy with it. Plus, their door doesn't have the ugly screw hole around the glass like the old door....See MoreTherma-Tru fiberglass door - any odor/offgassing?
Comments (20)We purchased our fiberglass door from Lowes 3 1/2 mos ago. Gasious urine odor caused us to become sick - dizzy, with headaches - and we were forced to move from our home. After moving from home and spending over $2,000.00 for mold, radon, and Co2 tests, gasous odor still existed. Son isolated front door by sealing off area by door to living room with plastic, and there was no longer odor/gas...We had it installed by a carpenter from Home Advisor because of long wait for scheduling Lowes installation. I have found on internet that door should have been sealed and painted. Door came with no instructions, nor were we told about sealing or painting door. at time of purchase. Was your door sealed and painted? I want to know if sealing and painting door now will eliminate gasous urine odor? Many, many thanks!...See MoreTherma-Tru fiberglass door - any odor/offgassing?
Comments (4)Just to let you know that HMI has a small geographical distribution, so may not be in your area. Provia doors are the best but their prices will literally take your breath away. HomeGuard very good and are also expensive but not stratospheric the way Provia is. ThermaTru, while not at the quality of the 3 mentioned, are good, and there are many satisfied customers. To determine which is the better choice depends on what you want out of this door, your budget, how rough is your climate, how long you plan to live there, and the like....See MoreRelated Professionals
