Help with Therma-tru Door and wood staining?
Comments (4)Agree that the wood/fiberglass match will be tough to match exactly, but I would think you could get it close. Here's a pic of our mudroom entry - thermatru stained door with wood trim. The wood is reclaimed chestnut with a natural sealer/finish. And the thermatru door is walnut (i think)single application. The thermatru door is finished with the thermatru stain product. (pic was taken before we had walkways/lawn done, so ignore the ugly grass you see here) :)...See MoreProblems with ThermaTru entry door
Comments (144)I bought a very expensive Therna Tru front door with frosted side windows and the finish started to disintegrate on the door. That is because the sun hits it in the mornings and the finish just did not hold up and began to disintegrate and come off. First contacted Lowe's who I bought the door through and Lowe's passed me off to Therma Tru. Contacted Therma Tru and it started to weasel out of any responsibility on its 10 year warranty and gave me a hard time. I assume Therma Tru has had other problems with its wood look finish disintegrating. i am going to keep posting wherever and whenever I can about how Therma Tru does not honor its 10-year warranty on its expensive front doors. I am a service-connected totally disabled homebound Marine Corps veteran who paid over $5,000 for the Therma Tru front door. Bought it along with Pella windows through Lowe's on North Shådeland Avenue In Indianapolis Indiana, Richard Bovey Indianapolis Indiana...See MoreFactory Painting of Therma-Tru Smooth Star Door
Comments (3)Whew. Where to start. Prefinishing is not something that is always done by the factory. Many times it's just a off-the-shelf product applied in a controlled environment, nothing more. Easily something you or any painter could do almost as well, if not better [i.e. no thinning] I work for a distributor and a local painter does our prefinishing, something we charge a handsome fee for. If I was finishing a steel door and trying to do the best job possible, it would go to a body shop, and I'm fairly sure they could do a good job on fiberglass too. Harvey should be able to provide some information on what the door was finished with, so that someone can help you re=coat it, or strip and start over. The pinkish color may simply be due to colorants that were used to arrive at the finish color, just like your local paint store uses. These come in different grades and cheaper ones, combined with the thinning may have brought you to where you are now. They may not want to tell you, as you might discover what I just said, that it's just house paint? And power washing a house with a 25% bleach solution ALONE is like buying bias ply tires. We don't do that anymore, unless you want a bad job and trouble down the line. Ask your local paint store for a good quality house wash that will do much better, be safer to use, and not risk the growth of mildew and other un-wanted results in the long term. The proof may be in what it did to your door, if that is the reason....See MoreTherma-tru or Mastergrain front door
Comments (11)Thanks millworkman for your helpful opinions. Given that Therma Tru is middle of the road, what brand of fiberglass door would you consider to be higher quality? I may be more limited given what is available in Canada. The Mastergrain door has just recently entered the US market (maybe less than two years ago), and seems to be known for its very realistic wood grain look (cherry stain especially hot seller). We also looked into a door by Fibertec (also a Cdn company that makes good quality fiberglass windows too), but they did not offer our chosen decorative glass which is made by Trimlite (maybe we can go back to them and plead). Do you know anything about Fibertec doors? Thanks for your help. Carol...See MoreRelated Professionals
