Comments (17)Define 'large infestation' ;-) Do you mean where the buds and the leaves are literally obscured by and dripping with aphids? If so, I've had infestations like that, and Ladybugs took care of the problem without flinching. Generally, folks don't overwinter a great number of plants, and so the problem is usually much more manageable. If Ladybugs are an option in your area, I really feel they are the best option. Just spray off the plants to mechanically remove the excess aphids, and then loose the Ladybugs. In my experience, one Ladybug will clear a medium-sized plant. When I overwintered more plants, I would simply move the Ladybugs from one plant to another. The Ladybug larva are even more adept and voracious at aphid control. When the Ladybugs have done their work, I move them to my Hoyas, which are even greater aphid magnets. Josh...See MoreNow what ? Left bag of potatoes in van overnight . Now frozen.
Comments (14)chisue asked: "Do potatoes ever freeze in the ground before they are harvested?" No. Potatoes must be harvested befoe the ground freezes. However, on farms south of the Illinois/Wisconsin border, the potato plant dies and dries in September and should be harvested by the time the vine dries. Harvesting can begin as soon as the vine dies. Potatoes can be stored outside in a thick potato mound, but the mound must be constructed in a way to keep the potatoes from freezing and elevated a bit above the average gound level; They should not experience standing water, but at the same time, they need the earthern atmosphere to preserve their moisture content. Potatoes stored in a mound are good to about mid-March following harvest. If the frost depth is 18 inches, then the walls of the mound must be thicker than 18 inches....See MoreJet.com is now free - no membership fee now
Comments (3)I've only bought from them once, and I usually buy from Amazon. But in every case, the item I bought was also on Amazon, and when I clicked the link to compare prices, Jet was always less in the household things that I bought. A friend of mine laughs when I do my price comparing, but between Amazon and now Jet, I am able to beat the prices at my local Maine Target and Walmart. I hate shopping, and work LONG hours this time of year, so it's great to have the stuff delivered right to me door....See MoreNow that I have HVX, remove now or when dormant?
Comments (9)I personally think Jon is wrong about Roundup killing a hosta, and the easiest way to tell is wait until next spring and see if any of it comes back. And I also think he has not distinguished between infective viral particles and live intracellular breeding viruses. But I also agree with his thesis that it wouldn't hurt to do it his way if you were going to dig up and kill the hosta anyway. Even if the roundup doesn't kill the hosta, maybe it will interfere with the hosta being a virus factory, and it is true that HVX is harder to spread when the hostas are going dormant. I realize I'm wading into a pretty charged discussion here, I'm willing to listen to disagreement. I take personal attacks poorly. I don't intend this as a personal attack, Jon. I have listened to all sides and read the material. This is my opinion of the interpretations of the facts....See More- 7 years ago
