Sewing curtains - dry clean fabric before sewing?
Comments (6)Margaret, For cutting the bolt of fabric, I put all the leaves in my DR table, and then chairs at either end. The bolt is in one chair and then pull it over the table, and over to the opposite chair to measure and cut. Keeping it organized and loosely fan-folded at the opposite end helped. And when sewing, keep the fabric flowing from a chair to sewing machine to another chair so it doesn't get heavy as it goes through the machine and keeps it off the floor. It's a bit of a bother, but so worth it to sew your own draperies! And everyone is right about not dry cleaning. How curious that fabric.com would recommend it....See MoreSeeking recommendations for an all purpose home sewing machine
Comments (3)Any of the old Singer machines with straight stitch and zig-zag will do, provided you use the right needles. They are good for quilting-weight cottons up through heavy denim ... Sunbrella is in that range. One trick is to pause just before you hit a seam, with the needle down, and put a shim under the presser foot to avoid hitting the bump and stalling. If you are planning to sew extremely heavy upholstery material - the stuff with the thick backing, puffy chenilles, car upholstery stuff - you need an industrial machine. I just bought a Singer FashionMate 237 ($15 at a swap meet) and it's having no problems with repairing denims and sewing shirts. Check at businesses that sell new machines, and repair shops, and Craigslist....See MoreSewing Machine Recommendation
Comments (5)I'm a Bernina girl for the past 18 years. Even my little 230 sews Sunbrella marine without an issue. The only problem is that the heavy outdoor thread comes on cones, which don't work on the machine. I ended up winding onto bobbins. You could also set up some sort of thread holder....See MoreKitchen scissors? Shears? Recommendations?
Comments (38)Like everyone, I’ve had various different poultry shears and also used plain old desk scissors. I had a really nice set (Henkels) for a couple decades, then have had various cheaper ones. I think the following seems important: - A blade with a divot near the pivot, so you can grab a bone without it slipping away - Fairly substantial blade, that will crunch through bones - All stainless and plastic, preferably no fussy springs - Take apart, more to make it easy to sharpen than for cleaning (my opinion) - Handles that you can grip and exert force on even if your fingers are covered with oil/fat I don’t think you really need to pay more than $20....See Morelascatx
