I need an external back up on my computer. Look at this one please.

I don't want libraries or One Drive. May have to use ICloud. Will this do the job for me to keep all my pics and docs?

You don't want One Drive but you're willing to use iCloud? Does that mean you don't trust Microsoft but you're willing to trust Apple? To each his/her own, I guess. Does your computer have USB 3.0 ports? If no, the Seagate is probably backward compatible with 2.0 but the transfer speeds may not be as fast. That aside, it should work well to hold about 2,000,000 pics with an average size of 500kb each. Do yourself a favor and leave the external drive unpowered when not in use...just a thought.

Maggie, that Seagate drive is a good choice at a great price. Unless you have a lot of very high resolution photos, I doubt you'll come anywhere near using the 1TB (1000 GB) capacity it offers.

I'm a pretty intensive user of external drives and among the 10 or so drives I've owned over the last 10 years or so, the Seagate and Toshiba products have been the best.

azioh, 500K photos? While serious photographers may use the uncompressed RAW format that produces images in the tens of Mbs, most produced by phones and cameras these days are in the 2-8 Mb size.

What operating system are you using? According to the manual linked below this program is good for W98 through XP. It even suggests it needs VGA with Vesa - good grief Vesa was almost outdated when Noah left the Ark it seems. Check out this link. backing up your files and data at the very least is very smart, should you have a hard drive failure or your data get corrupted you would lose it if it is not backed up, burning to cd is one way to do that, but getting a stand alone usb hard drive is another way. They usually have a large capacity so can hold a lot of stuff. I have a 500Gig seagate freeagent pro . you basically just plug it into your usb port on the pc and your pc will recognize it as another drive, you can then just move files back and forth to it from your pc. That makes is very easy to put all your pictures and stuff that takes up a lot of room on it rather than on your pc hard drive, keeping your pc less cluttered and easier to maintain. You currently have 22.2GB free left of the 39GB that is your hard drive. One reason you do not want your pc hard drive to get terribly full is that it can not run some of the stuff you want to be able to run for maintenance if it is too full for example a defrag, and setting system restore points. As to do you need one that would be up to you. I would say if you do not use some method of back up currently for your files and data then you should be. I use various methods, I have the usb hard drive, I also use thumb flash drives, cd and dvd and I have an online storage locker I can store stuff online. So hopefully if something drastic happens I can salvage the stuff that was really important. You can also get image programs that will take a snap shot of your entire hard drive including the operating system, you can store that image file on the external hard drive or flash drive, and from that you can quickly recreate your entire hard drive, I have Acronis True Image.

snidely - thx - I bet that's why sometimes when I roll my mouse around the screen zooms in and out - I never knew why. I bet my cntrl key gets stuck at times. i know a few others do. time for a new keyboard I know. My son told me that last wk when he visited from out of state. He just shook his head at my keyboard. It's also missing a key or 2... I took some off to clean under them and lost a few... my E has the F12 'key' on it. that one had a piece break off underneath it... yeah, guess I'd better do that yet this wk before I'm caught without any keys that work. thx - I will try that (on purpose). lol!

Hmm, let's see if we can explain this for you. You cannot create an image of XP then transfer that to Win7. Why? Because you would wipe the Win 7 off the computer and have XP back again, not what is wanted. However you can back up all your personal data to either a CD, DVD, thumb drive or external drive to be copied back easily enough. Possibly most of your 'stuff' is in sub folders of My Documents so simply save My Documents. Then save your Favourites, Address Book and what ever else you need saved. Once you are satisfied that all your data has been safely saved you can insert the Win7 CD and reboot the computer. Hopefully your BIOS is set to seek the CD/DVD player first, if so simply follow along with the instructions that appear onscreen. One option offered if I remember correctly is to format the hard drive - or just the C: partition if you have the drive partitioned. hen you get the option to proceed with the install. You will have been warned that proceeding will erase all data currently on the C: drive of course. Once Win 7 is behaving nicely you can insert what ever you saved your My Documents onto and copy the contents to Documents in Win 7. My documents does not exist in Win 7 it is just Documents.

Snidely you are absolutely right of course, but seeing as I don't remember any camera questions coming from the OP I imagined these "pics" as coming either from a phone camera or being culled from email or the web in lower resolutions.

I have both One Drive and iCloud installed. I own a PC and an iPad and iPhone. I was told by an MS person I had to save received documents twice by, once in One Drive and again in my libraries. So two manual saves. I learned just recently Microsoft will save to both places automatically. I can now sync my pics from my iPhone to the PC in one library called PC>pics and don't have duplicate places. I also don't want folders in folders so all the pictures are opened and it is simple. The MS guy who set it up had different pics in several of One Drive/Pics locations and I added to confusion. Up to this point I was saving anything in two places on my PC because I knew no better. You are right I have very little in my saved places on my PC and thought this USB external drive that will work with my HP 2.0 or 3.0 USB will take care of everything but my music on iTunes if you all approved of this particular drive. This is for home use only and I have a lifetime of space. The One Drive is still on here but hidden from me. So this will back up my whole PC computer?
