I need an external back up on my computer. Look at this one please.

I don't want libraries or One Drive. May have to use ICloud. Will this do the job for me to keep all my pics and docs?

You don't want One Drive but you're willing to use iCloud? Does that mean you don't trust Microsoft but you're willing to trust Apple? To each his/her own, I guess. Does your computer have USB 3.0 ports? If no, the Seagate is probably backward compatible with 2.0 but the transfer speeds may not be as fast. That aside, it should work well to hold about 2,000,000 pics with an average size of 500kb each. Do yourself a favor and leave the external drive unpowered when not in use...just a thought.

Maggie, that Seagate drive is a good choice at a great price. Unless you have a lot of very high resolution photos, I doubt you'll come anywhere near using the 1TB (1000 GB) capacity it offers.

I'm a pretty intensive user of external drives and among the 10 or so drives I've owned over the last 10 years or so, the Seagate and Toshiba products have been the best.

azioh, 500K photos? While serious photographers may use the uncompressed RAW format that produces images in the tens of Mbs, most produced by phones and cameras these days are in the 2-8 Mb size.

Interesting enough, computer was fine until I tried to open Photoshop C3. Like last week, it gets stuck on MMXCore Routines when opening. Tried uninstalling it last week, but apparently it didn't happen. Thought maybe it would open since computer was running okay now. Computer crashed. Carol, hopefully others will come along with their ideas so you can pick the best of the bunch that suits your style. I am like Randy and use Acronis True Image, mine is version 7, for my backups. You would need something similar for the initial backup. I got mine when Acronis made it a free offer for a while. The idea was to get us to use it then buy the upgrade, a nice ploy too but I have stayed with version 7 so far. Regarding the timed backups of your personal data you might consider creating one folder for your work with sub folders for each program you use rather than allow each to store their work where they want it. Then it is a simple matter of copying that folder with all it's sub folders to the external drive any old time your heart desires. Using the method I have described you will overwrite the previously saved data folder. You will be prompted to agree to overwrite so you then have a choice of renaming the folder if you want more than one copy of your saved work.

Hi RC,I've followed this thread from beginning to end and understand what is posted here. What I need to know now is where is this snapshot of the os image stored for future use? Surely it's burned to a dvd,a secondary hd or an external hd, etc. Am I on track so far? Somewhere in the future the original hd crashes, malfunctions or just quits. Do I then physically remove it, set the secondary hd on which exists the snap shot, to primary function, if this be my chosen media, and boot up? If I had chosen to go the dvd route, do I replace the old hd with a new one and use the dvd to install the snap shot image? And in case of an external hd, can it's content incuding the snapshot image be copied over to the new hd? I realize we're covering a lot of ground here and I beg your patience. Please keep it simple as possible. I'd like to get this issue staight in my mind one time. I also understand this can only be done with the original computer the os was installed on. Thanks.

For Macs, SuperDuper is what I use and feel comfortable recommending to friends. Besides being very reliable, it tells exactly what is going on, meaning you are copying from where and to where--this assumes a backup involving an external hard drive. It also can make a bootable clone, meaning that you can start up and run your computer from the external hard drive when the internal drive is hosed. (You wouldn't want to run this way without making another copy for safety.) CarbonCopyCloner will make a bootable clone but had a cryptic interface, meaning it was difficult for non-technical users to be sure about what direction the copy would take. The CCC interface may have changed, but I've moved on with SuperDuper. The problem I have with Retrospect is that it copies files in a format that is not the same as your internal hard drive, so you cannot pull an individual file from it & you must restore using a computer that has another copy of Retrospect. This makes it difficult to determine that you are actually getting a good backup copy. SuperDuper can be run for free to try it out; when you pay the small license fee, you can run a Smart Backup, which copies what has changed to your backup for a fraction of the time required to do a full copy. A Restore operation should be just as simple and straightforward to do as the backup copy--only the direction is reversed. Not all backup software provides this. SuperDuper does. Apple's Time Machine is convenient in that it runs without operator direction, but Time Machine is too time consuming & complicated to use for a full restore. I use Time Machine only for having protection for my most recent files. The best strategy involves more than one backup copy, with at least one of them offsite, either an external hard drive or remote storage service. If you rely on external hard drives, you should backup daily & rotate them weekly.

Snidely you are absolutely right of course, but seeing as I don't remember any camera questions coming from the OP I imagined these "pics" as coming either from a phone camera or being culled from email or the web in lower resolutions.

I have both One Drive and iCloud installed. I own a PC and an iPad and iPhone. I was told by an MS person I had to save received documents twice by, once in One Drive and again in my libraries. So two manual saves. I learned just recently Microsoft will save to both places automatically. I can now sync my pics from my iPhone to the PC in one library called PC>pics and don't have duplicate places. I also don't want folders in folders so all the pictures are opened and it is simple. The MS guy who set it up had different pics in several of One Drive/Pics locations and I added to confusion. Up to this point I was saving anything in two places on my PC because I knew no better. You are right I have very little in my saved places on my PC and thought this USB external drive that will work with my HP 2.0 or 3.0 USB will take care of everything but my music on iTunes if you all approved of this particular drive. This is for home use only and I have a lifetime of space. The One Drive is still on here but hidden from me. So this will back up my whole PC computer?
