Back up for computer

I read about something called a back up drive you can buy for a computer.

Is this necessary.

I have lots of photos on my computer and I burn them to Cd's once in a while but I still leave the originals on my computer.

Is buying a backup device a good idea or do I need it.

I use my computer for mostly home things, no business.

This is what I have:

Win XP Pro

Version 2002/SP3

Intel Pentium 4 CPU

2.66 GHz

2.67 GHz

1.00 GB ram

C: 22.2 GB Free

Total 39.0GB

If I should need to buy one, what do I buy and do I just plug it in or is it a complicated install.

I am a firm believer in using an external drive for backups. I like to create an image so that if I have a catastrophic failure, I can simply restore the image to a new drive and I'm ready to go.

backing up your files and data at the very least is very smart, should you have a hard drive failure or your data get corrupted you would lose it if it is not backed up, burning to cd is one way to do that, but getting a stand alone usb hard drive is another way. They usually have a large capacity so can hold a lot of stuff. I have a 500Gig seagate freeagent pro . you basically just plug it into your usb port on the pc and your pc will recognize it as another drive, you can then just move files back and forth to it from your pc. That makes is very easy to put all your pictures and stuff that takes up a lot of room on it rather than on your pc hard drive, keeping your pc less cluttered and easier to maintain.
You currently have 22.2GB free left of the 39GB that is your hard drive. One reason you do not want your pc hard drive to get terribly full is that it can not run some of the stuff you want to be able to run for maintenance if it is too full for example a defrag, and setting system restore points.

As to do you need one that would be up to you. I would say if you do not use some method of back up currently for your files and data then you should be.
I use various methods, I have the usb hard drive, I also use thumb flash drives, cd and dvd and I have an online storage locker I can store stuff online. So hopefully if something drastic happens I can salvage the stuff that was really important.
You can also get image programs that will take a snap shot of your entire hard drive including the operating system, you can store that image file on the external hard drive or flash drive, and from that you can quickly recreate your entire hard drive, I have Acronis True Image.

Dee can - Please DO NOT trigger a Format. It deletes everything on the drive (including Windows). If you reformat your PC's hard drive, it'll be useless to you and won't start again until a new operating system installation is done. It shouldn't be something you need to do. raven - I disagree with your suggestion about the advisability of having a HDD image. Use of same would seem to be well beyond the ability of most people who visit this forum. To avoid problems and inconvenience, my first suggestion is that everything important should be backed up and, correspondingly, unimportant files needn't be backed up. Many users have nothing but unimportant files. A simple emailer and web surfer likely has nothing that needs to be backed up. My second suggestion is to avoid problems by using proper tools and practices. (Many of the tools and practices I've seen recommended in various threads in this forum I don't agree with) My third suggestion - if a problem is encountered that the user doesn't know how to deal with, find a service provider or someone knowledgeable to help you. For "seasoned citizens", younger family members may be useful for this. Write down on a piece of paper (yes, a piece of paper) the programs you use and the obscure websites you like and have bookmarked. Other than important data files (photos, music, correspondence), EVERYTHING ELSE on your PC can be reinstalled, re-downloaded, and otherwise replaced. If your PC is old, struggling, or otherwise deserving of a proper burial, buy a new one. They're cheaper than ever, and old your old PC may not be worth the cost or effort to resuscitate. Good luck to all. With a first rate antivirus program, all that's left for you to do is to know where you go and know what you open. With that and absent being very unlucky, you won't have any problems.

Hi RC,I've followed this thread from beginning to end and understand what is posted here. What I need to know now is where is this snapshot of the os image stored for future use? Surely it's burned to a dvd,a secondary hd or an external hd, etc. Am I on track so far? Somewhere in the future the original hd crashes, malfunctions or just quits. Do I then physically remove it, set the secondary hd on which exists the snap shot, to primary function, if this be my chosen media, and boot up? If I had chosen to go the dvd route, do I replace the old hd with a new one and use the dvd to install the snap shot image? And in case of an external hd, can it's content incuding the snapshot image be copied over to the new hd? I realize we're covering a lot of ground here and I beg your patience. Please keep it simple as possible. I'd like to get this issue staight in my mind one time. I also understand this can only be done with the original computer the os was installed on. Thanks.

So how's the packing going??? :D Dottie, I know you have dialup so an online backup is not going to be real workable. For the cords, here's another little trick. Do you have some different colored markers? Besides the tape, a different colored marker on the connector where it goes in makes it color identifiable. Some machines do this already but it's easy to do if yours aren't marked. The picture is another good suggestion but sometimes you can't see up close. Most are marked as to what goes where. You can also use some transparent tape and colored paper scraps (anything with some color on it). Back to the backup: The big question is this: If you were to lose your computer today, is there anything on there whose loss would cause you stress, or hardship, emotionally, financially or otherwise? If the answer is no, then you have nothing to worry about backing up. If you have or instance, tax records, important pictures or this is where your prized recipes are stored and you don't have them anywhere else, then you need to back up sometime. I don't work for the private investigators and attorneys anymore so I don't have a lot of critical data on my machines. When I did, I backed up weekly or more often and alternated backups. Now, it's mostly personal stuff that frankly wouldn't be earthshakingly important if I lost it but would be an inconvenience. I use my computer to keep all addresses & phone numbers. I have a notebook program that I use for notetaking, writing, ideas, recipes and the like. I wouldn't die without it but it'd be inconvenient. So, about twice a year I back up my whole system on a large external drive. Then about monthly I backup documents and forms that I use regularly since they get changed often. I back them up onto a USB drive, sometimes called a "flash" drive, "jump" drive, "key" drive, "pen" drive or a bunch of other names. I also back up the address book, the notebook program and my reminders program data. All of this easily fits onto a flash drive. I have several flash drives and I alternate them so even if one goes bad, I'll have a backup that is a little older so there won't be as big of a loss. It takes me probably 10-15 minutes to sort and find the files to back up and actually do it. I usually transfer this to my other computers since I want the data on there anyway and that's yet another backup. If you have important emails and have a webmail account, you're backed up already. I stress backups at moving because I've seen data loss happen at moves so often. I've done so many data recoveries for people whose lives seem to be on their computer and they've never backed up a thing. The drives do fail for various reasons and age has a little to do with it but new drives fail too. And this time of year, static electricity can be a computer's enemy. There's a lot of things that can happen besides dropping it. Now in reality the odds are maybe 1 in 1000 or less that something will happen. But, there's a lot of computers out there so it's a matter of are ya feeling lucky, punk? :) Couple other tips on moving the computer: - Assuming you have a standard monitor, you can only plug it into one spot, and it'll only plug in one way. Put a marker dot on the top of the plug to know "this end up". The little pins on there can be damaged easily. Be careful plugging it in. There's probably two thumb screws, one on either side of the plug. Unscrew them first, then gently wiggle the plug side to side, just a little bit, and pull it out. When you plug it back in, you'll notice the plug is a trapezoid, parallel top and bottom, but the sides are not parallel on the little metal frame. sort of looks like this: \ / Be sure the angles match up. I'm making it sound more complicated than it is. When you look at it, you'll see what's going on. -The keyboard might be a rectangular (USB) plug, a plug about 1/2" round or a round plug about 3/4" or so. Sometimes the mouse plug and the keyboard plug are the same. If they're the same and round, then it does make a difference which jack it gets plugged into. If it's the rectangular (USB) type, it doesn't matter. If the keyboard is the larger round while the mouse is something else, you won't confuse them. This is where the masking tape and a marker are valuable. -Printer. These days they're probably all going to be USB so it won't matter where you plug it in. If it's the wide 25 pin parallel port connection, about 2" wide, then you have to plug it into that spot, but likely will only fit in one spot. What you can do... -Unplug the monitor -Unplug the printer Move them separately -Set the keyboard on top of the unit with the mouse and not unplug them. Tie up the cords so nobody trips. Tape down the keyboard and mouse and they can be moved as one piece. It should go without saying but, carry the computer and monitor down the steps. DO NOT bounce it down the steps on a 2-wheeler! A 2-wheeler is a mover's best friend but it can be an enemy of a computer. I've seen too many computers and monitors bounce down staircases... One other little trick if you have important documents and no way to back them up. Try emailing the information or the files to yourself. Then they're on the server waiting for you if you need them. If the move goes well, you can delete the email or leave it there as a backup (if it's webmail).

Maybe you'd like to create a "system image"? Something like this? . I really don't know about the Facebook files. If you're talking about cached browser files I suppose you could clear browser cache prior to backing up but the space required to backup a few cached browser files would probably be so small that it wouldn't matter much either way. . I would either download and burn the bootable Windows 10 ISO or at least create the "system repair disk" (when offered by the system image tool). That way I'd have something to boot to in order to do the recovery (just in case my system wouldn't even boot up). --- "Restoring from a System Image Backup Should you ever need to restore your system image backup, start by making sure that the drive containing the backup image is connected to your computer. From here, insert a Windows installation disc and boot into setup. Once in Windows setup, click "Next," then choose the "Repair your computer" option in the lower-left corner. Another possibility... I use a third party utility (Acronis True Image, there's a free Western Digital edition as well as a free Seagate edition), because of familiarity and habit. And I suppose because I've also used it to restore successfully (earning my confidence). I'm not saying the Windows image tool is either superior or inferior to Acronis; I'm not qualified to judge.

Being a computer nitwit, I do not know the difference. Can you tell me which to buy, if any.

i know dell has an online backup data program that is quite reasonable..does anyone have any suggestions on whether this would be a good hting to use or not?

The 1 TB drive holds twice as much as the 500 GB drive. I'm amazed they're the same price. I would get the 1 TB drive.

the main difference is that the Go is very small and can be carried around in your bag easily it is made to be portable, the Desk is to be set on the desk and remain there pretty much like most external drives. the Desk is closer to the one I have.
The 1TB is one terrabyte which is well huge you should never need more space.
If they have smaller size like 250-500GB they would be cheaper and still quite sufficient in size.

I have never used Dell online storage, I use ADrive on line storage, they provide a very large storage locker for free and you can purchase more if you need it.

Carbonite is also a good option for a pay storage which also does backup automatically.

I didn't notice that one was a Go. If you have a laptop, a portable external drive can be very handy. If you've got a desktop, the larger drive is definitely better.

I remember being told something similar when I bought a 10 meg drive. And later, when I bought a 40 meg drive (and needed special software to use anything beyond 32 meg) and . . .

For me a person with only one computer and who seems smart enough to back up data on a regular basis would be wasting good money on an external drive.

Seriously, you back up regularly which is excellent so nothing can get lost apart from a few files since the last back up if the drive fails. If things go wrong simply reformat and load you programs back on a nice clean hard drive and have the $100 in your pocket for a better gadget later, like a bigger flat screen monitor if you still have a CRT.

Right now you have a half filled 40gig hard drive, what on earth will you load on a terabyte drive? You will need to send a search party to find your data in that huge expanse of available drive LOL.

Now this is probably a really stupid question. But in my accessories under system tools is something called backup. I have never used this. When I go on , it gives me a choice to back up to A:floppy disk or F: removable File.
I do not have any floppy disks, so I have a cd burner and that is it plus a small 1 GB Flash gizmo.
Can I put a CD in the CD slot when it says A: Floppy disk.
Then do I just say back up everything and about how many CD's will this take.

Personally I would not, if you try to back up your entire drive that way it will take a lot of cd's and many times they do not burn properly. I never had much luck with it anyway.
Well the thing is if you are going to do back ups as we all should you need someplace to store them and to me an external drive is by far the solution I prefer, now do you need to get one that large, no, I just saw a 250 Gig seagate for under $40. I have had better luck saving to external drive than to dvd and cd.
But everyone has their preferences and it is often by trial and error.

Also Lyban some of the external hard drives come with free software that will do the backups for you on a schedule and back up exactly what you tell them to. I know my seagate pro does and I think seagate did have a version of Acronis with some of their drives not sure they still do that.

Ravencajun is correct, all Seagate and Maxtor hard drives come with backup software on them. This started quietly about 2 years ago, I never really understood why it was never a big advertising feature. For those who already own an older Seagate or Maxtor drives you can visit the respective web sites and download the program for free, the Maxtor version is 103 megs and the Seagate 104 megs.

My thoughts on backing up was not to do the whole computer, just the personally created data. I did that for years and when I felt my machine was too cluttered I wiped my drive and started over. Now I use Acronis True Image but I have only ever done one restore from it.
