Lost something on my computer screen - need help getting it back

I had a + and - sign on the upper right corner of my screen - I did something and now it's gone. Don't know what I did. I need it back to enlarge type on some screens because of my eyesight (or lack of it).

I don't even know how it got there but it's been wonderful to have and I use it constantly. Or did until today.

can anyone help?

I have those in firefox but don't see them in Internet Explorer so here are the instructions to get them back in firefox: right click on a blank space on the menu bar (somewhere to the right of help on the top toolbar). On the drop down menu click 'customize'. A dialog box will open up and you will see things you can click and drag to the toolbar of your choice. Scroll down and find the zoom + and left click on it and while holding the mouse button down drag it to the address bar where it used to be (or wherever you want it) then do the same for the zoom -.

By the way Steph, you may want to add the NoSquint add on for firefox. Right click on a page in firefox after you install it and click on 'no squint' in the drop down menu. You can change the size of the print and no squint will remember when you go back again. There are other things you will see that you can do with no squint if you try it.

When IE7 installs it moves IE6 into the Windows folder and puts IE7 in your Program Files; "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" You might go there and right click iexplore.exe choose properties and see if it shows as IE7 - if so, double click it. Hopefully once started it will take over and continue to work. .... You might go read about System File Checker(support.micosoft.com) and run it... SFC Â /scanonce That will fix corrupt files and drivers and some of their configurations too. One way to repair Internet Explorer and numerious other problems is to reinstall SP2 ... assuming you're on XP. Being how you cant access update.microsoft.com you may have to search for and download xp sp2 at download.microsoft.com.

hard drive failure... I might want to look in bios and try to assertain if the hard drive parameters are set correctly or maybe set it to automatic detect. If that's not it, probably open the case and unplug the cables to the hard drive and reinsert them, both on the hard drive and the motherboard. Something to start with anyhow. Could be something as simple as the time is set incorrectly or the cmos battery on the motherboard is old and needs replacing.

It really depends on what speed you 'should' be getting, ie what speed you are paying to get. What is available to me is through towers and the local electric company and what I am paying for is Up To 512kbps I just tested mine at that site ( had posted the link) and see I am getting 523 kbps download and 429 kbps upload. The magic words here are 'up to' and I can't and don't expect to get the maximum very often. Sometimes it will slow though to 100 - 150 kbps, or less and that's when I give them a call and they usually do something like 'reset' the tower...they sort of explained it to me as being comparable to computers regularly slowing and needing defragging. I'm confused that you got 1.3Kbps...was it maybe 1.3Mb?...or 1.300 kbps? Do you know what speed you are supposed to be getting...like up to what max speed?

oh thank you so much - I got them back! I missed them so much today - and they've only been gone about half of the day - lol!

I'm going to copy out your instructions and save to my computer doc folder in case it happens again.

On Win PCs, hold down the Ctrl key while rolling the wheel on your mouse to zoom in and out. Besides most browsers, this works with many other programs, including MS Office.

snidely - thx - I bet that's why sometimes when I roll my mouse around the screen zooms in and out - I never knew why. I bet my cntrl key gets stuck at times. i know a few others do.

time for a new keyboard I know. My son told me that last wk when he visited from out of state. He just shook his head at my keyboard. It's also missing a key or 2... I took some off to clean under them and lost a few... my E has the F12 'key' on it. that one had a piece break off underneath it... yeah, guess I'd better do that yet this wk before I'm caught without any keys that work.

yes keyboards are way too cheap to put up with those kinds of problems LOL

I have given several to the goodwill stores and see them there for just a dollar or 2 nice ones so if you don't want to spend much you can try that route.
Big Lots has some very nice ones for under $10 too.
