planning to start a deck garden- some general question
Comments (6)Speaking of roses. I'm now growing (for the second time) a rose called Zéphirine Drouhin (aka Charles Bonnet). If you want a climbing rose, this one is highly recomendable. Blooms repeatedly with very scented semi-double pink flowers. I have read somewhere that they will be alright in more shaded areas, but I don't know if this is actually true. The red canes are quite thin, and easy to bend, so that you can attach it to a trellis. It's virtually thornless, which makes it ideal on a balcony, where thorns otherwise can be quite a nuisance. I have to say though, that some plants (like the last one I had) might get tiny little thorns with a foot or so between them, but they are so small and few, that this isn't much of an issue. I grow mine in a self-watering pot, that contains about 4 gallons (15 liters) soil. Again, I have mixed pine bark into this. This will over some years turn into soil, and make sure, I don't have to change all the soil for some years. In the winter wrap the pot in a few layers of bubble wrap, move it to the wall, tug the canes down behind the pot and give it loads of mulch (as much as you can top up on the pot). Comments (4)Thanks for the info and the quick response... I am hoping to choose the area today to put this earthmaster and get started. I will hit the store and get the hardware wire for the botton, and was thinking of bricks around the bottom edge of it (to hold it down and seal those bottem openings) to help prevent attraction to mice. I will avoid the moth balls - as much as they would help, I have small dogs and would not want them to get in contact with the moth balls. I will be careful to bury all food into the pile, and cover with browns to keep down the odor. Well on my way to composting...uh huh - my hubby said he's not going to let me come HERE anymore - I get "too many ideas" LOL. ** I do have ONE more question now about the "odor" of the food...buring the food items will prevent the odor...but won't it just start to smell (attract critters) once it gets stirred and the food is moved toward the sides? I am still a bit confused about how often to stir as some people seem to post "3 to 5 days, then others say "every couple weeks" and other don't seem to stir at all?? There sure is a lot to learn about this...I never thought it about how much there was to know!! Thanks again for all your input....See MoreInspired to start a flow through...Now I have some questions :D
Comments (12)As the worms process the material at the bottom of the bin, it will become mostly castings. When that happens, the worms will move up into the "fresher" food. If your composting chamber is deep enough (it looks like yours is) the bottom few inches in the bin will generally always be pure, or nearly pure castings that the worms are no longer eating. As for the bottom being wetter, that is true with Rubbermaid bins, but in a flowthrough bin, the bottom is exposed to the air, so it may be drier than the bedding above it. It depends on how you manage the moisture in the bin. You don't want the bottom to dry out, since dry castings become hard and difficult to harvest....See MoreStarting owner/build in Northern CA, some questions
Comments (11)Thanks for the info... lindsy ca, That's a great thumbs up for Delta and a nice thing to do to water down your gunite while out of town. I am going to send them my design tommorrow and see what they can do for me. Thanks for the tip on Adams Tile and Plaster as well. Have not heard of them but will be calling them tommorrow as well. Aquaman, Nice looking pool and landscaping- very similair to what we are going for accept the back edge of our pool will be set slightly into the slope of our backyard. We are looking at doing a raised bond beam along the back wall, with a little rock work and water feature and then a free form along the front side. I have heard good things about Eric Johnson as well, and they seem to have done A LOT of pools around here. Thanks for the info on steel and plumbing contractors. I have the fewest references on these two contractors so growing that list a bit would be great. Seems to be a ton of people in this area who have done owner/build. The more I look into it, the more people I find who have done it. As a matter of fact, I have not yet run into a single person who did owner/build and had a bad experience from it. That's 10 to 12 people so far, all who built their own pool, and were pleased enough with the experience to say they would certianly do it again. I am putting my equipment list together now, so my design, engineering, and equipment list will be posted for anyone's critique by next week....See More- 8 years ago
