Hello, a couple pictures

Some I started from seed last July, these are the survivors.

Seeds may have been from Tropical Oasis or Molly's corner, I ordered from both.

I watered by spraying from a spray bottle, they didn't grow too well.

still alive, though. For scale, the pot is 8 inches across. This was started outside, moved into the sun, which they didn't like, then moved back into the house

Some I started about two months ago (I didn't think to make a note when)

Seeds from rarexoticseeds.com/. Five varieties, five seeds each, I got 9 plants, I would say, for me, good germination. I like the way one is branching by itself For scale, the pots are 2.5 inches across. Bottom watering these, mix about 2/3 commercial cactus soil, 1/3 perlite. They are growing in a garden window in my bedroom. Fertilizing with product from General Hydroponics, I wanted to ensure that they got their micros.

And now for a question - I see these have spider mites, what's a good way to deal with those?

I feel the first batch suffered from a distinct lack of water. Spraying from a bottle unless you stand there for an hour only serves to wet the surface, not the roots. Newly emerging seeds and young seedlings require lots more water than older plants. They should be kept uniformly moist at all times as this is when most growth will occur. Personally, I have never been a fan of community plantings once seeds have emerged, if one plant gets a bug, others follow closely behind, forget to water the pot and they all suffer....just my thoughts. That second batch look great though, don't they? Congrats, please keep posting with your news :)

Wow big difference between seeds. Maybe the first ones were old. The second ones look so much better.

Get some MITECIDE/pesticide. I don't know how well such young plants will handle harsh chemicals, but at such a young age; you need to do something quick. If it's nice enough where you live to put them outside; do so, and spray them with the strongest stream of water they can stand. Spider mites thrive indoors! Plus, there are predator insects outside.

Sue, No, that isn't what I meant. By the time I got around to taking this picture the tree was well past its peak of pushing out healthy new leaves. We had had some rain, and some of the leaves had already dropped. Some of the remaining leaves had lost some of their crisp colors. A few weeks earlier it was just a more beautiful little tree. Your question raises the concern I've thought about (and people here have commented on). Will the leaves gradually lose their variegation? Time will tell. 2008 was my tree's second full year. When I got it around Jan., 2007 it was a tiny rooted cutting. As of this year it showed no signs of weakening variegation. I'll be watching it next year for this. One limb (a lower limb) from the beginning has had normal leaves - with no variegation. I've got more notes on this topic, and I'll post more later. Henry

Some of the most delicious mandarin varieties, just small seedlings right now the two on the left are Page, two on the right are Shasta Gold close up, Page mandarin on the left, Shasta Gold to the right Neither of these two varieties have a lot of seeds so I had to go through a lot of fruits to be able to find the seeds (which was still fun). There's an amazing little market nearby that brings in all sorts of rare varieties when they are in season. I even have a mandarinquat seedling, not shown, but it's doing pretty well, and a few other rare ones you wouldn't believe would be sold in a market. (And I'm far away from citrus territory)

Some of the plants from the "Rare Exotic Seeds" batch are still living and growing. About 4.5 months old now, growing outdoors in mostly full sun. I should keep notes.

Should I re-pot or not? It seems I've read recommendations each way here, and forgot the reasons to chose. I should take notes.

My immediate goal is just to keep these alive and see what kind of flowers I get.

Got rid of the spider mites by spraying with a water bottle and keeping the plants outdoors.

Bayer 3 in 1 is great for mites.
