Great pics, and I love to watch the little critters that visit the gardens! I spend hours contorting myself into strange positions to get pictures of the pollinators and other visitors. At first, the bees or butterflies seem skittish when I first appear, but after a few minutes, they seem to get used to this big human creature with a camera. They let me get very close sometimes. Here are a couple of the assorted bees that come to pollinate - Yesterday was very exciting, a female Monarch was alternating between nectaring and laying eggs on the Asclepias tuberosa and incarnata. Here she is nectaring - And here she is laying an egg - Can you spot the butterfly in this picture? . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Oh, here she is!

Hi janice The big plant too the left......Gunnera. I'ts only a baby at the moment, the leaves can grow too six feet across when mature! It likes very damp rich soil and that's what i give it,including my Hostas. I have old punctured pond liner dug in all around my pond (just over a foot down) to slow down drainage,as most people in the UK grow Hostas as bog plants. Mind you there's been no shortage of moisture this year what with the continual rain, but last year there was a severe drought. But it looks like there forecasting some settled fair weather so it's not all bad. I would just like too say again thanks for all the replys and welcomes, especially Julie.Cjheers.

Hi Gibby: I am not a professional photographer but some of my eqipment is professional grade. I have several Canon digital SLR cameras and several telephoto lenses and I switch around depending on the weather and how close I get to the birds. Most of the pictures you see here were taken with a Canon 40D camera and a 200mm lens. Some were taken with a Canon 1D Mark III with a 400mm lens. To me the secret is luring the birds up close. I feed them meal worms and they come up to within 10 feet of me. As long as I don't make any sudden movements they pose for me. Sorry if you asked and I failed to respond before. Dave

Thanks for the welcome! I immediately went to check the soil pep when I read your comment. Luckily I didn't see any thing of what you describe, but I think I will screen it before making a big batch just in case. Thanks for the heads up! Also, the worm castings I am using is not what you see at the big box stores in the bag. This is literally 100% pure worm droppings with zero added compost or anything else. It's literally only a couple tablespoons per gallon. I'll attempt to post a picture of the bag from my phone. Therefore I'm still considering using peat in the mix. If anything, maybe I'll cut the compost ratio down to .5 making it a 3:1:1:.5 mixture. Will see.

We benefit from your hard work to get these fantastic shots in places that we might never visit. I certainly hope you are being adequately financially compensated for your efforts. I put a link to your photos on twitter yesterday-hope others came over for a look

Thank you Rachel!

The truth is that my passion for birds is a lot older than my new and great passion for photography and although I can say I don't do it more than for fun, I'm graceful to say that it also buys my gear upgrades and that's cool with me :)

Cheers,

Alex
