Comments (6)I saw numerous seedlings at Annie's Annuals this weekend -- they are a medium length drive for you and they do mail order. Just make sure you have the space for it! I moved a Cleveland's sage this winter because it was getting overgrown by the Matilija. I'm putting in a barrier, and a lot of cute native annuals like Phacilia viscida and Madia elegans (as two unusual ones) in the space it will eventually also take over. Then I'll just have to prune it hard in the winter. It's 7-8' tall now and easily 5'x10' wide, no summer water and just covered in flowers....See MoreHelp me identify these CA natives
Comments (7)Al, These plants were uprooted and subsequently planted, as I mentioned in the original post. I had to put them in soil as soon as possible and I doubt anyone, even an experienced gardener like yourself, could have avoided the stress of transplant unless they dug out a block of dirt when moving them. These were growing in a gravel driveway and were going to be sprayed with herbicide. I saw the opportunity to save a few. That is all. I find your comment very condescending....See MoreWhen to plant California natives
Comments (11)Anytime can theoretically work, but it's definitely more difficult during the dry season. Many natives are very sensitive to transplanting stress, which is greater if you're transplanting them in the summer heat. If you plant any natives in the summer, I recommend planting them at night, so the roots aren't exposed to quite as much heat during the transplanting process. Planting them during the very end of the wet season can also cause problems, because the plants may not have time to get their roots out before the summer drought sets in. I planted a silver bush lupine this past March, and it grew a foot, produced a flower spike, then shriveled up in May and hasn't recovered, despite the fact that I'm now watering it considerably more than before. (It's not actually dead so far, but it looks terrible, and I don't know whether it will survive or not.) My other silver bush lupine, planted in January, is still perfectly healthy - probably because it had more time to get its roots out before the summer. A lot of natives are also prone to die from overwatering, especially in the summer, so I think it's much safer to try to plant natives early in the wet season and let them get their roots out before summer, rather than planning to give them extra water during the summer to keep them alive when they're newly planted....See MoreFavorite specimen plants for CA gardens?
Comments (6)For the shrub category, Dendromecon Harfordii is a nice choice. I won one about 10 years ago in a drawing. Didn't know where to plant it, so I stuck it out in the middle of my backyard. It's now as large as a midsize sedan. It has silvery green leaves and produces yellow fragrant blooms that are similar in shape to California poppies. Bloom is heaviest in Spring but it flowers most of the year. All I have to do to it is look at it. I never water it. I suspect it may get some benefit from a slow soaker I have on my Crape Myrtles about 8 feet away. An aromatic choice is Cleveland Sage. It's my favorite filler for dry borders. It's a hummingbird magnet. They are super fragrant after a rain. If you want a specimen plant that will eat your yard, Matilija Poppy is a gorgeous choice. Though it does need some water once mature, There is nothing like the grace of California Sycamore. They smell good too. It's name notwithstanding, Arizona Cypress is a Cal native that you can find in big box stores from time to time. Beautiful bluish foliage. It's happier with some water. Tecate Cypress is a recent introduction to my garden. It has airy gray green foliage. The jury is still out on it for me since it's not filled out yet but it seems happy with the water the Crape Myrtles get nearby though I do not directly water it....See MoreCarly S.
