When to plant California natives

We are interested in converting areas of our front and back yards to native gardens in an effort to conserve water (what a concept! yeh, I know.... what took us so long???).

Several years ago my reading on CA natives told me that they should be planted in fall (in our zone where we have mild winters).

According to the Las Pilitas Nursery web site, that is one of the popular myths about California natives. They provide a handy chart showing the best and worst planting times for different areas of CA. (I'm not sure where the Pomona area is represented in that chart -- low desert???)

Wondering if anyone plants natives year-round (based on your climate) and your preferred irrigation method for natives -- how this experienced has worked for YOU.
