Winter storage and rodents
Comments (8)machiem.... I also have the Rat-zapper and yes they really work. I bought mine when I lived in San Diego. We had lots of palm trees where I lived and rats like to live in them. I had a rat making regular trips to my outside patio after the dogs food. I guess the dog would spill a piece or two of small dry food. Anyway I got the Zapper on ebay and put the batteries in and a couple pcs of dogs food in it and set it out on patio....low & behold next morning the red light was flashing , I got the garbage can and turned the Zapper on end and a huge rat fell out. I guess farmers use these around grain bins. Well they work for sure. When I moved (still some boxes to unpack) I brought it along and will have to find it and put in garage so mice don't get into things...like mower , tractor and other things....See MoreTunneling rodents in raised beds
Comments (7)Beneficial Nematodes are excellent at controlling grubs, fleas, and other harmful critters, but won't harm your earthworms. That's a great way to discourage moles--and the much larger armadillos--from digging up your yard and garden. I found that if I didn't let the ground bake dry, I could get by with a half-dose of new starts in the spring. You just water them in with a good quality hose-end sprayer, then keep the ground slighty moist under the surface. I got a mix of two varieties, "stationary" and "travelers." They were quite helpful in controlling fire ants and fleas. As for voles, wiki is our friend! (Sadly, we can't say the same for the voles, which mostly prefer seeds to grubs. Not much for burrowing, though. I found one had made a nest under an old piece of plywood in my East Texas back yard, but the "burrow" was really just a shallow scooped-out cup near the edge of the wood.) Comments (8)If plastic hardware cloth is strongly discouraged for protecting birds in aviaries from carnivores (by folks who are expert at that stuff), seems to me the same has to apply to protecting vegetables. Animals will chew their way into an enclosure if there is good stuff to eat there. Frankly, I suspect rodents are pretty clueless in thinking about how enclosed they will be. I'm here, the food I want is there. Chewable plastic in between. That's the equation they're solving. I've put chicken wire fencing around veggies, and squirrels burrow under it to get in to get those veggies. They get in and gorge. Yes, they're sorta enclosed, but there was a way in, and that's the way out....See MoreUnidentified (rodent?) nest
Comments (5)We have some serious woodchucks. This isn't a big enough hole for the big boys rolling around my neighborhood, though there is a whole family of them taking up residence under my neighbor's shed. I really wish he'd try to put them out on the high road, because they are awfully bold about scooting under the fence and visiting my property. Luckily, my dogs keep them on their toes....See Moreken_adrian Adrian MI cold Z5
