"Idiot's guide" for starting to grow Adeniums by AJ

last modified: 7 years ago

Preface - This is not an all encompassing guide but a CliffsNotes version for absolute "newbies" to find via search or be pointed towards. One didn't exist when I asked so I said I would create one. Here it is. If there are egregious errors or advice, let me know and I will edit to correct.

----------

Rule #1 Treat like a cactus in the winter (very infrequent watering) and a tropical in the summer (water as needed).
Rule #2 Temperatures of 55F / 13C or less + tons of water = rot.
Rule #3 Potting medium chosen must drain quickly.

If you follow those three very simple rules, there is absolutely nothing scary about growing or caring for adeniums.

=======================================
====== Potting Medium Ingredients =====
=======================================
Part A
* Peat - sold almost everywhere; not eco friendly though :( - can use peat based potting mix
* Coconut coir - sold as compressed blocks; rinse repeatedly in case of salt
* Pine bark "fines" - may be as hard as finding a unicorn in certain areas; grind down large parts of un-colored pine bark if you can't find

Part B
* Perlite (cheap if bought in large bags)
* Small river rocks/pebbles/gravel (cheap)
* Granite rocks - sold as chicken or poultry grit/scratch
* Turface-MVP / Napa auto dry / calcined clay - **holds moisture** - make sure you bought the right stuff, it should not dissolve in water (cheap)

Part C
* 10-10-10 or 13-13-13 controlled release fertilizer - much easier to deal with; mix in or place on top
* Liquid fast release synthetic fertilizer
* Organic - avoid till much older or transplanted into larger container

Substitutions due to price and/or availability:
Q: I have XYZ and it seems to work for a mix, can I use that?
A: So long as it drains correctly for your climate it should work.

========================
====Seed starting mix===
========================
Coir:perlite:peat 2:2:1 ratio
or
Perlite:peat or perlite:coir 2:1 ratio

Peat can be plain peat based potting mix you find at the store. I prefer mixing in coir.

===================================
==Transplanting / container mix ===
===================================
Make a "gritty mix" from A + B above based on your climate. Part C will also depend on climate and laziness; I choose controlled release fertilizer.

Live in a place with rainy summers? Find a combination that drains very, very fast.
Arid/dry summers? Drains a little slower; use more Turface and Part A as that holds moisture longer.

Regardless of area, you should keep Part A ratio equal or lower than Part B. Too much of Part A will likely cause drainage issues.

=======================
==== Germination ======
=======================

Place seeds horizontal and just barely cover.

Until two leaf stage
1. 50% sun
2. Keep moist
3. Temps in 75F-95F range.
