Do you have a digital voice recorder that's easy to use?

We're attending a party for my brother-in-law's 75th birthday and I've decided to give him a recorder and a book as to how to go about recording family history. (Hes' full of great stories and likes to relate them.) I know it would be best to have someone interview him from time to time and I'm hoping one of his kids might do so. (We live in another state.) Anyway, my head is spinning, reading all the reviews. Most of all, it needs to be easy to use. Any suggestions?

I keep a photo-journal. I'm a Mac-addict so all the pics are in iPhoto along with brief descriptions. I like keeping things simple so with just a couple of clicks of the mouse I can find anything I need along with a visual. This is a great way to keep track of growth and seasonal changes in a plant. I have a web page too that I try to keep updated. I also have a small photo album with plastic photo sleeves in which I keep plant tags and seed packets until I take pics of the plants/seedlings and put them into iPhoto. I really lucked out with this album. I found it years ago at Michael's - it is about 8"x10" with two-sectioned plastic sleeves inside for the pics and the outside is covered in pretty flowers & butterflies with a small green check background - there's no mistaking it's for the garden. And the sectioned sleeves inside are the perfect size for tags and seed packets. As for plants I find interesting and may want to purchase at a later date, I usually find a website with info on it and bookmark it. These bookmarks are kept in a gardening "folder" so again just a click of the mouse to find it. I'm all about the KISS principle when it comes to gardening, which is one reason why I love cottage gardening. : )

I use Windows Movie Maker (WMM) - about the same as Bumpkins recomendation of PhotoStory - both free and both Microsoft products. Windows Movie Maker allows you to do a little more with your photos - you can make one run longer if you want. You don't have to keep them all a certain length. You can narrate into a microphone and directly record onto you project. You can also add music and special effects. With PhotoStory - you are limited to keeping all the pictures the same length and you can't mix/fade music/narration. If you have XP or Vista - you should already have it on your machine. Look under accesories if it doesn't show up on your program list. If you have Windows 7 - you can download an older version of WMM. If you are using a Mac - iMovie is a good option also.

As I am sure Alisande will testify..when we go on a photography walkabout for a day it is not in the least unusual to shoot 400 or 500 photos, and I was finding that when I got home I had the photo but had forgotten the pertinent details about the subject. I tried for a while to make written notes, but to be honest my note taking skills are sorely lacking. I then dug out my old digital voice recorder that is about the size of a pack of cigaretts and put that in my pocket, but here again, I was seldom using it like I should have. About 6 months ago I found a tiny digital voice recorder on Ebay for about $18 that is the same size as a digital flash memory for the computer. I now carry that on a lanyard around my neck and use it constantly. About a month ago I took an evening seminar at the local community college and generally I like to record a lecture, but they had a rule, no recorders.... I took my little flash drive recorder and used that and no one was the wiser....LOL The only thing different than a normal flash drive is that it has a small slide switch on the side to turn it on. When you turn it on the red LED flashes three times to indicate its on but the light stays off while its recording so no one realizes it is a recorder. I have even bugged an office by plugging it into the USB port of a computer that was turned off and turned the recorder on. Nobody pays any attention to a flash drive plugged into the computer. Boy did I get some juicy gossip that time. It's amazing what ppl say about you when they know your not around...LOL . It will record up to 4.5hrs.

What do you use for precipitation records?

For a general guide, I use BWI airport, 15 miles away as the crow flies. Its accurate enough on temperature, and for precipitation it usually accurate on an annual basis. Of course, during the warmer months of the year, the extreme variability with convective precipitation means that between here and there could be a several inch difference in any given month, going either direction. We had a wet July and August, but haven't had measurable precipitation since September 6. The soil is still surprisingly moist a few inches down, but we do need some rain. September's average precip here (Central MD) is misleading. It is naturally a fairly dry month if you take out tropical storm/hurricane influence, because we don't have enough heat and humidity to generate reliable thunderstorms on a regular basis, ( my non-scientific mind believes that the low sun angle contributes to this as well) but we're not late enough into the fall season yet to get significant synoptic rainfall events outside of tropical systems. September can also be a very wet month, due to the aforementioned tropical storms. Do average rainfall is a bit over 4", but there is a large variance, and it can be quite dry or quite wet. When considering the active tropical season this year, I'm actually surprised how dry it's been. We can definitely still get a deluge in October, however.

I use this Sony and like it for recording lectures. Easy to transfer recording from device to computer.

Passe, maybe, still worthwhile. Dang right, for me anyway. I use them all the time. One is carried on me most all the time. If I don't make a note of things, I tend to forget. Plus it's handy for price comparisons, remembering in what lot you're car is parked and much more.

The Sony is a nice unit but the buttons are small. If that's an issue, the Olympus one linked is much better. Buttons are big and easy to figure out as far as basic record/play functions. I have 2 old Sonys that are quite basic by todays standards but they're so user-friendly, they are advantageous. But they're no longer made. I have a newer Sony that is similar to one linked and I have an Olympus that is very similar to the Sony linked. I don't like that Olympus. I also have an Olympus very similar to the one linked and I like it but it's not used too much. Why do I have so many? I had one I would carry on me for work, I'd leave one in the vehicle and left one next to my chair. Got one for free that I couldn't turn down and I bought one for a gift and it was already one received so I decided to keep it since the old ones were starting to show their wear.

Much of your challenge will be whether he's willing to do it and if he is excited about doing it, there won't be much of an issue getting him to use the recorder as long as you have one that's pretty self explanatory.

I wanted to do a similar thing when my Dad was alive. Didn't happen. Good luck getting it going.
