Another blueberry post - please bear with me!
Comments (7)Blueberries do best in full sun. Wild blueberries can grow in very thin soils, sometimes they are found growing on rocky outcrops, with the roots down in the cracks, where there is some leaf dust. However, these wild plants are scrawny survivors, that don't require much moisture. Cultivated highbush varieties, like Patriot, produce more fruit, but they also need more moisture, and better soil. If you can make compost with shredded tree leaves, that material will be the main component of your blueberry bed. Mix it in with whatever native soil you have, and that should be ideal. Be sure to check soil pH, and if you have hard water, you might have to add agricultural sulfur sulfur periodically. Its usually necessary to do pH testing at least once a year, unless you have naturally acidic soil....See More1st year review of Anemone 'Wild Swan'
Comments (64)I was browsing the internet for reviews and/or comments about Wild Swan and this thread came up. So I'll ask here. I planted mine in the Spring of 2015 and still no blooms. The foliage seems healthy, hasn't wilted despite this past hot summer, but not as full as I see in photos posted here. There is even new growth coming from the center. However, no blooms. It is in semi shade until 2pm. and then gets full sun for several hours. Good soil with leaf mulch. I'm wondering if I should move it and try again somewhere else, but I'd hate to lose it altogether. I don't even think nurseries here are carrying it anymore, perhaps other gardeners did not have success with it here in NE Ohio....See More1ST Post! 1st hot pepper attempt!
Comments (11)Capoman: I keep thinking about getting more soil and I drive by the store every day. I don't think I will sleep right till I do pot up to the 3 gallon. Going to stop there later! And as far as the 511 mix. I am scouring my local shops to see what I can scrounge up..not going good. Thanks for chiming in. Bill: The summers get brutal here and I also picked up some lava sand to top mulch and then cover with pine chips. Just getting ready for the summer and trying to slow down evaporation. Everything helps and since I am planning on moving sometime around August, containers are my only option. Bruce: I guess I have to get out of the bonsai mindset. I am in the habit of root and top pruning my other plants because they are in containers as well. The bonchi fascinates me. With the 1 gallon and soon the 3 gallon containers, my plan was to use the thick green gardening steaks punctured through the bottom drain holes of the pots in an attempt to steak down the plants and use the bamboo with green gardeners tape to create a mock tomato cage style holding pattern to some what control the growth. I do not mind doing the additional work. My Espaliered trees require a lot of work so it is a nice break to get to play around with the pepper plants! :-)...See More1st-Year Marathon Sod Not So Happy
Comments (33)If you dump a bunch of fertilizer on a possibly diseased, heat/drought stressed lawn in the middle of Summer it may not do so well. I recently replaced a fescue lawn. St. Augustine & Bermuda were suggested. After weeks of attempts I could not source St. Augustine or bermuda sod. I ended up seeding bermuda (never do this if sod is available). This change has helped me regain my sanity. Bermuda is the right grass for our weather. It's 90 - 105 since I started & this grass don't care. It's been 6 wks now & I water 0.25" every 4 days - far less than the recommended 1" per week, and that's with crazy sun & heat. My grass is moist to the touch, never experienced anything like this with the fescue. The bermuda, I fertilize heavy every 2 weeks, it's a different grass and obviously loves the abuse. I just don't find myself worrying about my lawn like I did previously. The correct grass for the environment improved my QOL. My bermuda takes time to fertilize and mow to maintain a low profile, but it's still less than the time/mental energy I had with the fescue....See Moresmorz
