Need Beginner's table saw
Comments (30)My work shop shares my garage with two vehicles and a boat. I have a 1968 sears table saw 113 2990301. It has a 10" blade, a dado blade, and a cast iron table. It also has the side wings that was offered by sears when it was purchased. Depending on the position of the side wings I can cut a 48" plywood. I use it for general around the house cutting projects, and make a lot of picture frams with mitered corners and rabbits for the picture. I would not trade it for some of the cheap stuff they are selling to day. It is on a base with wheels, and is complemented by my work bench which is also on wheels and is the same height as the saw. I can move it so it works as set up table for the saw, or reposition it for an out feed table. I have ripped 10' board by my self with the set up. My primary use is making mitered corners on picture frames. I have used it to make some minor furniture, and trim projects in the house. Your concerns seems to be price therefore I would look for one of these saws. They can be found on Ebay for a couple of hundred. You may want to spend another couple of hundred for a good blade, dado bladed, miter gauge, etc. I have a solid 45 miter guage that I use for miter corners for the picture frame. http://www.ebay.com/bhp/sears-table-saw Since this basic table saw was sold by Sears for many years parts are available both from places like Ebay and Sears parts store. My dad's table saw nearly identical to my 1969 saw was from the early 1950's PS: when I wrote the above I did not realize that the original post was 10 years old. I don't know why it appeared as a post with new replies....See MoreMy first belt driven table saw
Comments (28)brickeyee, I have had old sears tools for many years. I used to use one table saw often and I have never had a saw bearing fail. I am glad that the bearings were easily available. However regarding price: while I agree that $100 or 160 is a perfectly fair price for a decent table saw, you likely could have done much better, especially if you were willing to do the repairs. For example, I often go to auctions (admittedly this takes time). I have seen many old sears saws go for less than $25 or $50. I recently got a Jet with extension table and bessimer fence for $125 and now I have a couple of sears saws sitting apart in my atic. Yes the Jet was an exceptional deal, but plenty of people have given up on the old stuff. When I have had motor problems, I just switch in another old motor that was $5 or $10 at a garage sale or auction; or free. By the way, Yes of course the tension was by weight; from a pivot block that may be missing on your saw....See MoreHelp -- need a Table Saw fence
Comments (5)Please get a fence that that only uses a front rail. Anything else is junk. If you have novice experience with a tablesaw you can really easily hurt yourself using a poor, or rigged fence. You can also hurt yourself a lot of other ways using a state of the art fence if you're a novice. Take care and be safe. Make sure the fence is parallel with the blade. Then move the back of the fence one micron away from the back of the blade. Kickback comes from the rear of the blade binding the material against the fence. Tilt the back of the fence away from parallel with the blade ever so slightly to minimize the kickback risk. You do this by adjusting /shimming the front rail of the fence where it mounts to the table....See MoreShopcraft Table Saw T-6700
Comments (1)I tried to do some research on that saw with little success. It was made under that name by at least two different companies, both of which are no longer in existance. What that means is that even iff you could find the manual, it would take buying another saw to get any parts. There are all kinds of comparable saws on Craigs List or other places for $40-$70 which have all the parts and even blades. You will be money and time ahead to buy one of those....See Moreklem1
