type/brand of paint for primer/basecoat
Comments (2)I always use primer and two coats of paint on new surfaces. Old surfaces get a through cleaning and then may get a coat of primer depending i what the surface is and how clean it is. I always use two coats of paint though. Some of the 'covers in one coat' paints do not have any warranty if only a single coat is applied. Covering darker colors can take more than two coats occasionally also. While compatibility problems are pretty rare now (Brand x primer and Brad Y paint) within the same type of paint (latex, alkyd. etc.) I tend to purchase from the same place since my discount is based on volume....See MoreWater-based Primers - Kilz, Primecoat2, 1,2,3, etc
Comments (4)QUOTE:::Any water-based primer brands that you like better than the others for interior walls and cabinets? I'm looking for water-based (even for over built-ins with existing alkyd paint) There are several great primers, but again primers have their place and different primers do different jobs. Just normal change of color, minor (not medium or above repairs) once in awhile painting, then your Zinsser's 123 may be ok for your walls; built-ins I would sand with a softback sanding pad , then use XIM-UMA primer or Zinsser's -Smart Prime....See MoreOkay to use water-based paint over oil-based primer?
Comments (7)I agree with paintguy. Acrylics increase their adhesion with time. What scraps off after 2 hours may well be adhered after 2 days. As to Behr paints, I have personally made test samples of Behr Ultra, Marquee and WB Alkyd over sections of hard, slick, high gloss oil paint. I hand these to customers and defy them to scratch it off with their fingernails. They are wearing thin with literally hundreds of tries, but they are still intact! Wanting to see the worst case scenario, I did not sand or de-gloss the oil paint. I am an old school painter, raised on oil pains and somewhat of a doubting Thomas. I have become a believer. If someone's paint is "balling up", I would wonder what is on that surface? Was it cleaned of oils from hands or other pollutants?...See MoreDifferent appliance brands in one kitchen OK esthetically?
Comments (50)cpartist, I just finished looking at your condo on the other thread. Stunning! Your new house plans look and sound amazing too! All of you have certainly convinced me that the guy whose comment started this whole thing is the silly one, not I for looking at appliances from a workability standpoint. Shelayne, speaking of functionality, how do you like your microwave/speed oven? I've rather tentatively decided on a micro/steam oven because I steam veggies nearly every day, but I looked at some micro/speed and was curious as to how the speed oven works? Fori, you make a good point. Not all harvest golds were the same, nor were all avocado greens. Now, unless you can get something really speciality or retro, you're basically choosing amongst black, white, and SS; sometimes bisque. beachem, yes! Craigslist is my friend. I almost never buy anything at full retail price. Everything goes on sale if you're patient. But "gently used" is great, and there are some good deals to be found on Craigslist. Rebunky, you're not so bad yourself! :-) I really appreciate how you and everyone here have been so nice and have taken an interest in my little project. As for the Maytag...don't get me started, lol!...See MoreChristopher Nelson Wallcovering and Painting
