Monarch cocoon in a not-so-good place

User

One of my three fine, fat monarch cats has made his chrysalis on one of the giant elephant ear leaves. It's one of the new leaves, so I'm hoping that as the leaf grows, it doesn't push it off. Also hope it emerges before the leaf goes into decline.

I don't know what happened to the other two cats. One was still on the plant this morning, but dropped off and was curled up on the ground like he was dead. Now he's gone, so maybe this is him, or maybe he found another place to make a chrysalis.

I think these are the offspring of the butterfly I hatched last winter. I know they sometimes come back to the plant where they were born to lay eggs, and I babied that one so much, taking it in and out all winter to save it. Well, now I have another one to watch emerge.

My 7 cuttings rooted, so I'm thinking about planting them all along with the tall one in a large terracotta pot, so the future cats will have plenty to eat.
