Using a soda bottle in an outoor garden

Last year, I planted a hydrangea in my relative's garden as a gift, but there was excessive heat and the plant probably died from lack of watering. I would like to install an irrigation system, but there is no faucet nearby.

I saw an article where you would bury a soda bottle with some holes on the side and the bottom near the plant. I could just fill it up every couple of days or even every day when it's really hot. Would this actually work?
