New to ordering tomato seeds online.....company suggestions
Comments (3)In other words regardless of source, are all Better Boy F1 seeds created equal? _________ With that particular variety since it is well stabilized, likely so since the seeds from all the common hybrids are usually purchased by the reputable commercial suppliers from just a few grower sources and then re-sold to the public. Of course that would not be the case if you buy from individual sellers (IE: those on ebay, amazon, etc.) so you need to stick with reputable vendors. But that is NOT true for all varieties. There are literally 100's of hybrid varieties where the quality all depends on the source of the seed. You can find any number of discussions about reputable dealers and non-reputable seed dealers discussed on the Growing Tomatoes forum here. My personal preferences are tomatogrowers.com and tomatofest.com Dave...See Morereading blure prints
Comments (8)Okay, let's see if I'm getting straightened out here, and not misleading the OP. First, what is a "callout"? Are we talking about the first definition just below? Definition: 1) Similiar to a photo caption, a call out is a label used to identify parts of an illustration. The call out may be a simple bit of text around the perimeter of the illustration with or without a line or arrow tying it to a section of the illustration or a call out may be framed with boxes, balloons, use arrows, or have some other decorative treatment. 2) A pull-quote or text extract from an article set apart in a larger or contrasting font is sometimes referred to as a call out. If so, then we're talking about on the blueprint. I just pulled my own blueprint and sure enough, all openings, windows and doors, are expressed in feet and inches. That's what the OP was asking about. Then, if I can go on to specifications, let's assume the text there just refers to the drawings. But, architects (and my builder) always generate a separate Window Schedule and Door Schedule. How will we see the door and window sizes specified there? All in feet and inches, like on the blueprints? And, then on to actually ordering them. When an order is submitted to a distributor/manufacturer, are both windows and doors again expressed in feet and inches? Or, is my specs guide purchased from Before the Architect perhaps referring to windows being differently described on the actual order? So that windows are ordered in inches only--not feet and inches. I'm guessing that is what he meant. Who knows?...See MoreThe fine print
Comments (8)I work in publishing; one of the most difficult/knotty parts about publishing is the use of images, and the rigmarole involved in getting "permissions" to reproduce images/materials. And it's getting knottier all the time, due to the internet. In my field, the source minds a great deal. They don't see it as free advertising--they see it as infringement of copyright. We have to get permission for use of an image whether it goes into a book or onto a web site. And as you found out, if you found the image elsewhere (like Pinterest) you cannot cite them--they don't own the copyright. You have to go to the source and ask (and often pay) for their permission. And they will want a credit line. I've chased down original sources around the world. It's painstaking. I was recently asked if I would do photo research for a project, and I turned it down, because it involves securing permissions. Just too complicated. I'm sure others will be able to provide more insights--I've just touched on some of the high points!...See MoreDo you always make a sample block when starting a project?
Comments (27)I do hand applique blocks (VERY time consuming), and sometimes design my own. The first thing I (usually) do is a quick fabric mockup on a photocopy of the pattern, just gluesticking rough cut scraps. Then I put it somewhere I can view it from a distance to see if the colors contrast enough, and I can change anything easily. To audition backgrounds, I cut away the white areas of the mockup. Another idea is to take digital photos of blocks and play with them on the computer (with whatever software you want), or print them out in color and play with different design ideas, or cut them up to design layouts, borders, etc. Printing or viewing the photos in black-and-white lets you see value differences. I just finished reading "Color Confidence" by Jinny Beyer and it is very helpful for choosing colors! I would love to take this class at her shop (Northern VA) someday.
