reading blure prints

Hi we just got our prelimanary drawings and have questions about the sizes of our windows and doors. Here is one example, my bathroom window shows 5070. Would that be 50 inches wide and 70 inches tall or 5ft x 7ft? I asked the designer and he stated they were ft. However, since he will have no connection to our builder. Does anyone know off hand if thats how the numbers are usually interpreted by builders?

Yes, the 1st # is always feet and the 2nd is always inches. Always width followed by height. ex. 5676 would be 5 feet 6 inches wide X 7 feet 6 inches high.

RE: "I just want to print a part of the page as highlited" Absolutely the best way that I have found to do any type of screen capture is to use FastStone Capture - selections, scrolling pages, windows, etc. Loads of options and you can choose printer, file, editor, etc. Click Settings Tab then Settings on the drop down menu (it is so obvious that you don't realise at first that there are 2 menus). It is a small programme that can run all the time without affecting the computer's performance, or just start it when you need it. My link is to the last free version that will do everything ever needed although there is a newer paid version that does even more! I see much what Fly sees. Looks like a faint horizontal line at the top of the first letter also, flagging to the left. That does look like maybe a dot over the trialing letters. I was thinking 'man' or something. There are some sites with artist names and signatures that might turn a name up or be familiar with the artist if you can contact them.

I posted the other day and it did not show up. I thanked you for the offer but posted that we made a fabulous find at Home Goods on Sunday!!! Two huge black mesh metal poppies!!! They are perfect to hang behind the red sofa and thought they were very different. They do have something similar on kohls.com but not as large. They must be 36" across, three dimentional and little fru fru metal centers. I did also thank you for your offer to borrow your photos. So thanks everyone and hoping I can learn to post pics again and will post one once she moves in and everything is in place. (I think I preview the post before and never submitted so thanks again for all of your offers of assistance.)

There's a slight complication in that the format for window and door callouts differs.

For windows, if the callout is 3068, ex., the window is 30 inches wide and 68 inches tall.

However, for doors, if the callout is 3068, the door is 3 feet and zero inches wide and 6 feet and 8 inches tall.

rar1 is correct pinktoes. Your example of 3068 for a window would be 3'0" width x 6' 8" height.First two #'s are feet and inches for width, second set of #'s are feet and inches for height.

The link is to a thread where the question was asked about getting help with writing your own specs. After reading that, and Anthem's post there, I ordered the specs ($60.) from Before The Architect. So, now I don't know whether to trust anything else in his specs. either.

Okay, let's see if I'm getting straightened out here, and not misleading the OP. First, what is a "callout"? Are we talking about the first definition just below?

Definition: 1) Similiar to a photo caption, a call out is a label used to identify parts of an illustration. The call out may be a simple bit of text around the perimeter of the illustration with or without a line or arrow tying it to a section of the illustration or a call out may be framed with boxes, balloons, use arrows, or have some other decorative treatment.

2) A pull-quote or text extract from an article set apart in a larger or contrasting font is sometimes referred to as a call out.

If so, then we're talking about on the blueprint. I just pulled my own blueprint and sure enough, all openings, windows and doors, are expressed in feet and inches.

That's what the OP was asking about. Then, if I can go on to specifications, let's assume the text there just refers to the drawings. But, architects (and my builder) always generate a separate Window Schedule and Door Schedule. How will we see the door and window sizes specified there? All in feet and inches, like on the blueprints?

And, then on to actually ordering them. When an order is submitted to a distributor/manufacturer, are both windows and doors again expressed in feet and inches? Or, is my specs guide purchased from Before the Architect perhaps referring to windows being differently described on the actual order? So that windows are ordered in inches only--not feet and inches. I'm guessing that is what he meant.

Ordering is the same m.o. as a takeoff.Width in feet and inches followed by the height in feet and inches.Doors are sometimes confusing concerning the swing,right hand or left hand, as some mfgr's have it as looking from the outside of the door in, others the opposite, but they all follow the same width x height, feet /inches.

Generally door and window schedules are layed out on the prints by having a seperate logged section for windows and doors and then marked on the framing layout in their respective locations.It's up to the builder as a rule to specify to the plan drawer any special sized doors or windows, usually posted as a side note,that lets the framers aware of an unusual rough opening size, otherwise it's up to the framer to frame the rough opening to the size of the window/door,which is usually a standard layout.

When working with unfamiliar window/door suppliers, it's always a safe bet to get the rough opening sizes from the supplier who has those details supplied to them by the mfgr.The mfgr's in their books follow the same width x height, feet/inches.I've never seen it any other way where it was stated in inches only. If you had an 11" wide window such as a sidelight, it would show as 0'- 11" or 011
