Really stuck with window/sink placement-need advice
Comments (12)Alida, I had a similar dilemna. I wanted my sink centered on one of the windows and had to work the dishwasher in as well and really wanted it to the right of the sink. AND in addition, we wanted the group of windows to be centered on the wall on the OUTSIDE of the house. Something had to give... we had to go with a much smaller sink base than ideal and so my sink is fairly small, but it was also important to me to have a generous amount of prep space on one side of the sink or the other (my old kitchen had a medium amount of space on either side but not really enough to be effective so with the remodel it was extremely important to me to have one long stretch of counters to work (another reason for the windows and no upper cabinets... I don't like the feeling of having the cabinets overhead)). anyway, here is a pic of our situation in case it helps. and also, the 36" base cabinet sounds nice, but I would think this is an area you could fairly easily compromise. My mother in law has a 36" base cabinet for her pots and pans and it is a jumbled mess because it has too much space to stay organized. perhaps you could easily get away with a smaller cabinet?? and make so many other things work out better in the compromise?? not to hammer the point, but I think the size of the sink will have more of a day to day impact on you than the size of the base cabinet (just my humble opinion!!) :)...See MoreWindow Placement
Comments (6)How about a corner bay window or corner (angled) window. Maybe smaller than the examples below so you can still fit a door to the deck. Example 1 Example 2 You would have to scrap the double French door and have a single glass door. I believe the idea of the double French door is for a better view but the corner window would get you that view. I would say single glass door, corner (angled) window, then a window to the right. For framing they would have to transfer the corner load from above to the two sides of the window bay. Essentially two support posts would support the entire structure in that corner and also above the door and window. One post between the door and corner window and one post between the corner window and other window. Would definitely be a big change order but looks like its worth it. The easier route would be to just move the window over closer to the corner. The view is still blocked a bit by the corner though....See MoreWindow Placement Question
Comments (19)Depending on furniture layout, that space between the windows would be a good spot for a sofa and a large piece of art, or a gallery wall, over the sofa. I also have no problem placing sofas in front of windows, but you lose the wall for art and have to consider fading, which would mean upholstering with indoor/outdoor fabric and/or using light blocking window treatments....See MoreNeed help with window placement design on garage!
Comments (14)Large windows at the back of upper garage means probably no work table or wall storage. Any chance of throwing a wrench in frustration? Does the vehicle prefer a view or is there some alternative function occurring upstairs? At times you may be able to see into such large windows, and if that is viewable from your house, or street, and the garage is not finished or is storage or whatever, then you might want window coverings. Window coverings are not optimal in buggy, webby, dusty, garages. Do the transoms mimic anything on the house, or is placing 3 symmetrically and mulled together on the side acceptable? Is there any way to enter the lower level other than the overhead door (doesn't look like room for an interior stair)? Can the window become a door?...See Moresheloveslayouts
