What do your homesteading children do for fun?
Comments (12)My brother and I built a fort, another fort, and a 2-story fort. Then, we built 3 dog houses for our dogs, a rabbit pen for our 2 rabbits, helped my grandfather remodel his home, and helped him build bee hives. So, we started enjoying building VERY early on. It wasn't something they made us do, just something we loved to do. We were both homeschooled and only had to do school study for about 4 hours a day. That left plenty of time for other activities. We played forest rangers from the time I was 7 until I was, well probably 16! We loved to listen to Old-time radio, specifically "Ranger Bill" and "The Lone Ranger". When I was 10, I started farming with my own little flower garden that my granddaddy helped me start. Then, when I was 12 and my brother was 9, we started our first vegetable garden. It was very small in comparison to my granddaddy's farm but it kept us busy. We grew 10 rows of corn, 25 tomato plants, and some pepper and okra. Since then, we have continued to grow the size of that garden to 5 acres and now we want more to farm. My parents and grandparents (who lived next door) never forced us to work with them. We just wanted to. Instead of having lots of friends our age at school, we made friends with our family. (For which I am so grateful now!) We didn't watch TV (didn't even have one in the house) didn't play on the computer (only got one of those when we started college) and spent as much of our time outdoors as possible. And yes, even after a hard days work building and gardening, my brother and I still enjoyed digging holes! I think its something that kids just like to do. We dug 7 holes that I know of, probably more! One we got 6 feet deep and were starting a tunnel before it collapsed! We had dreams of digging a hole with tunnels into the earth like a cave to be our hideout! If it sounds like a childhood from the 1940's, you're right, it was! But now at age 24 and my brother age 21, we both are best of friends when many siblings hate each other. We have strong ties to our family, work on our family farm, enjoy life and have something to work towards in life so unlike many of our peers in college! I wouldn't trade my childhood for anything in the world! Yep, there were bad times but boy did we have fun! -Rachel...See MoreFor fun- What should you be doing now instead of being here?
Comments (44)tinker1121 - TAKE ME WITH YOU!!!! OK, this started on Monday and today is Thursday - I guess I should be doing the stuff I should have been doing on Monday!!! The truck came this morning to pick up some IRS stuff I've been trying to get rid of since I moved into the house, almost 5yrs ago. Now that leaves me corner to put the things that I kept in the floor in the other rooms because I didn't have space. Tonight though, I'm getting off of this contraption and putting away the clothes I washed over the weekend. My new washer and dryer are so great that now I actually like doing laundry - that took a lot!! I've washed everything in sight. Problem - I need to put the stuff away!! Luv chatting with you all!! It beats being a domestic diva (which I'm not!) gng...See Morewhat did you do for fun today, July 4?
Comments (19)Moni-What a fun bike! I've also never seen a bicycle built for 3 (and 5 if you count the kids!) We are at my in-laws house in Maryland. Luckily they didn't lose power from last weeks storm. About 80,000 still without in the VA/MA/DC area. We lost power for just a day, so was a minor inconveince. Anyway, my sister-in-law and family are also here from Alabama, so we have been having fun just spending time together. Gone on a few walks around the block to burn off some of the goodies we've been eating! Tuesday we went to Ford's Theatre in DC for a free tour and lunch. Pretty interesting and makes me want to read up on Lincoln and John Wilkes Booth. Took the kids for a swim to cool off yesterday and may hit the movies today (same reason!) Didn't feel like dragging everyone in the heat so we just set off some little fireworks in the front yard. Neighbors came by with some bigger ones. The older kids are travelling to Gettysburg to get some more history. Tomorrow we are hitting the Amish market-I've never been so I am curious!...See MoreThe Un-Dream House, Just for Fun: What would you do?
Comments (8)Thank you all for playing! I didn't even want to bring up the situation on the inside, because I felt overwhelmed just looking at the mold and the basement toilet which appears to have no door? I agree about the hanging cabinets in the kitchen and that door being awkwardly placed, though I can never give up a way to let the dogs out...too lazy! I agree about painting it all one color ( would choose cream, with putty colored shutters and a colorful door, maybe) removing the shrubs, and repositioning the walkway. Our walkway is the same way--leads to almost the top of the driveway, which means any visitors have to squeeze past cars to get to our door. Annoying and not welcoming. The back of the house is indeed plug ugly. I'd just plant a whole row of hydrangeas and call that a fix, after fixing/replacing the brick patios. For sun relief, I'd like a pergola I could plant with wisteria. My friend has one to die for and I have too much shade to justify it at my house. I feel like decks are far too much work in our climate--my neighbor's looks quite awful and the one friend I have who has a nice looking one has to spend money on it every other year. Our brick patio has required zero work other than a power wash in the decade since it was put in, so I'm a fan. re: the ugly wires on the back of the house, I will never understand why they put the service hookups on the back of the house. There is almost always a side of the house people aren't going to have to look at from either the front or the back patio--why don't they put it there? My house is just like this--all the wires lead right to where you're sitting :(...See Morelegomom23
