Baby red oak tree growth issues

I found a baby red oak in my front yard and transplanted it into a 25gallon pot. I moved it back in the middle to the end of March. It stand about 6in tall and has 4-5 leaves. It stays green but it won't grow. In a month's time it shows no progress other then not dying. I'd there anything I can do to help it grow???

Comments (7)annie: If the trunk diameter is 4-5 feet, you can bet the Oak tree is more than a century old. That's a very large diameter for any Oak; do you know WHAT KIND of Oak you have? So many different varieties. The shape of the leaf will give you at least a clue, and may be definitive. When I was a child, my favorite Oak was a Chestnut Oak, because it had the biggest Acorn of any Oak in my area (and could very well have the largest Acorn of any Oak, anywhere). We used to make pipes from the Acorns, by hollowing out the Acorns, then sticking in a straw. We could pick up recent cigarette butts by the bus stops, where people had to discard large butts when they saw the bus coming; then we'd empty the tobacco into our "pipes", and get quite ill toking on the tobacco, at about 10 years of age. Chestnut Oaks are so named because the leaves look like Chestnut leaves, with serrated edges. Great spreading branches, easy to climb. Oaks like the Willow Oak--their name derived also from the small, willow-shaped leaves, had smaller branches, and many of them, and were always too thick and tangled to climb at all. Red Oaks in our area keep a number of their leaves intact through Winter--about 1/3 to 1/2 of them, in my area. You've probably noticed them--they turn brown (tan), but remain on the tree. Comments (13)I have had the opposite experience. Yes cords can be problematic, but this can be control with a little forethought. You just have to be aware of where the cord is at all time, and when you are running it out to the job, plan where the tree and the cord will be when your are cutting up the tree. I bought my 14" electric in 1985 when we lived in Wilmington NC. The reason I bought it was to remove a lot of dead trees that had been killed in a forest fire. Most of these trees were less than about 6" in diameter. We then moved closer to the coast and things changed in the next several years when we had about three hurricanes per year for several years. In Bertha we lost a few trees, In Fran we lost about 30 trees from 3" saplings to a beautiful white pine that was about 18" in diameter. (Nearly 30 inches where we cut the trunk off) While we lost a couple more in the following hurricanes, Fran had taken the weak trees. All of these trees were cut up with the 14" Poulan Electric Chain saw We moved and in the last 14 years, I have had a couple of more trees fall. They were all cut up with the electric chain saw. One was an old apple tree, and most recently a large sweet gum that came down in a thunderstorm. Comments (7)do you think it can make it a few more months like this? ===>>>> it could take a few years more ... trees work in tree time ... and that time is usually not weeks or months ... dont go trying to kill them with too much love .... i would put it in bright shade ... just because pots get real hot in sun ... a little lesser light is better than baking the roots ... are these local oaks.. for your area??? .. do we have an ID? once in mother earth .. they ought to recover nicely .. i mean new leaves ... it might be worth your while. to have a soil test done at your new place .. for any deficiencies in the soil ... if there are.. act accordingly ... but do not amend a planting hole ... your local county extension office may also have off the cuff info on the soil in the area .... see link for planting guide ... ken https://sites.google.com/site/tnarboretum/Home/planting-a-tree-or-shrub...See More
