Best way to try to save files from a failing hard drive - mount i
Comments (7)I am going to get a whole house surge protector. But should I also invest in getting "good" surge protectors for my electronics (tv and related peripherals, computer and peripherals?). If so, could someone point me toward a good one. I wouldn't know what makes a surge protector good (and think just getting expensive is not the way to make the selection). I do have surge protectors in all those areas, but don't think we selected them with any real knowledge. Thank you. Lynn. PS - and my efforts to copy are delayed - bc. I can't find the replacement drive. We received so many packages last week - and during the power outage - so I was opening and putting things away by flashlight - and so far, I can't find it. have this scary feeling that my husband or cleaning woman thought the box was trash and tossed it out. Comments (1)Make sure the file you have created is not still open. Close your burner software and any other software accessing the file, and remove the dvd from the drive. Then try to rename it again. If you still can not rename it, right click the file in windows explorer, select properties, and ensure that it attributes are not set to protected, hidden, or read only. If they are, uncheck the boxes, click apply, then click ok. Try to rename it again. if this still does not work, try rebooting your conputer. If this still does not work, please type the exact error code you receive here....See MoreNeed Help Moving Files from C Drive to 2nd internal hard drive?
Comments (9)Thanks everyone. Lots of useful methods. Mikie - it's good to know about moving entire folders (I don't have my video's in folders - yet - but am just discovering how useful that would be for shows I've recorded for a few seasons - having them altogether). I'd like to double check and ask what "a cmd window" is - and how I'd get there. Again - I have Windows XP (SP3). Sorry to say, Mikie, but I also need more explanation for what "make a shortcut to the destination , within the folder the files are in... then select a bunch of what I want to move, cut&paste onto the shortcut" means. I know someday I'll understand all of this, but I don't know how to make a shortcut to the destination. And once I cut and paste onto the shortcut, what do I do with it? Absolutely there are some big files - so I'm glad to told me to break it up into smaller chunks. I have so far. Thank you. Lynn....See MoreGetting files off my old hard drive
Comments (3)If you wish to slave the hard drive from your old computer to Dad's machine why not use the ribbon cable and power connections for the CD/DVD player temporarily? This way you can copy your data to his drive using Windows Explorer then burn it to a CD or whatever. Just rest the old drive on a box or book beside the case for support during the process. The other option would be to buy an external drive enclosure with IDE connections and install the old drive there. These connect via a USB port Then you have an ideal way to back up your data. These enclosures have come down in price dramatically. As your 'stuff' is professional quality you might buy a known brand enclosure, just a personal thing for me but you do not need to lose that data. I would also recommend one with it's own power supply unless you are confident the new computer has an adequate power supply....See Moreruobet55
