Getting files off my old hard drive

This is gonna be technical.

I got a new computer today after my last one's motor died and, come to find out, it has SATA hard drive connections instead of IDE, the one my old hard drive used. Okay, so I sighed and went to my Dad's computer to see if I could set up a slave connection. Well, I only saw one primary hook up, so I thought, why not just pretend my old one is this computer's master drive? Hooked it up that way and it kept getting the computer's welcome screen and a error page that asks if I want to start up in safe mode. Why is this computer not recognizing the hard drive?

I'd rather not take it to a store because I'm a writer and a very private person. Is there an easy way for me to get my files off of my old drive and onto my new one?
