2nd year in a row my Lynwood Gold Forsythias only bloomed @ the bottom
Comments (7)Lynwood is also native to Asia. Btw, I've always called them Lynwood Gold, because the nursery I got them from called them that, and so do apparently tens of thousands of other people online. I'm not going to rip them out and get hardier Forsythias though, because they've grown so tall in my yard, and appear to love it here. They just suck at blooming....See MoreForsythia not blooming?
Comments (2)Where are you, or actually, where are your in-laws? In my area a non-blooming forsythia probably doesn't have flower buds that are hardy enough. So when I brought a cutting of my grandmother's central NY forsythia bush here to NH, it only bloomed where it had been buried in snow because the flower buds were killed by cold. Years when there was little snow when it first got really cold, there were no flowers at all....See MoreForsythia blooming---time to prune?
Comments (7)Wait as long as you can of course. The closer to your area's frost free date the better. That said, over here I had no choice. It got incredibly warm in mid February and has stayed that way with temps into the 70s. So whether you like it or not stuff started leafing out. All my roses are fully leafed out. Peonies are coming up. Last week we had two days in which temps dropped to 30 at night. Lots of new growth got nipped on my roses. Then they started again and last night temps dropped to 29 with frost everywhere this morning. I'm sure lots more new growth has been killed. What is it, each rose bud has "3" eyes? So my if the third eye gets killed that bud is done for....See MoreWhich forsythia Variety Has the Brightest Yellow Blooms?
Comments (11)Sulfur yellow to me is a paler yellow, less gold. I think more like daffodils than most with perhaps even a tiny hint of green to the yellow. If you are willing to drive a bit, there are a ton of arboreta and botanic gardens in PA, including arboreta at both Penn State and U of PA, Longwood Gardens, Hershey, etc. I'd check to see if any have collections of forsythia. I don't have anything close, but have gone down to the Arnold Arboretum when I wanted to see a whole collection....See MoreRhamel (aka teengardener1888)
