Forsythia bloom on growth that was produced the previous season. Once that growth matures past a year or two, it will not rebloom - most mature forysthias will have bare "legs". You can cut them back to around 6 inches after bloom, but that's a pretty severe approach and generates what is pretty much an eyesore for the rest of the season. The recommended process is to remove upto 1/3 of the oldest stems as close to the ground as you can manage. This will encourage new basal shooting from the root crown that will offer lower blooms next spring while still maintaining a decent appearance to the shrub. If you repeat this process each season, you will eventually have a shrub that is full of bloom from top to bottom and is of a manageable size and height.

so very cold winters will keep them from blooming out right. we got a few sporatic flowers on one large clump. can a plant get too old to bloom right? someone told me that cutting it back will make it bloom better the next year. or at least she said it did for hers

How neat !! I have two, 3yrs. old , and they arn't reblooming. BUT, I have a Flowering Pink Almond bush that is reblooming now. It was the first thing that bloomed early this spring. It is about 3 years old. The flowers are really pretty and soft, all Pink, the pic looks like white blooms. Hope your bush keeps flowering , I like the pretty yellos blooms. As I drove around this year I did notice that there was not a big show. I have the old ones that were in place since the place was built probably 60 yrs ago. Like the the other older homes in the area there was a show not as big as in prior years but a good show. They are not the new improved ones so I have never had a no bloom Spring.
