What are you trying to replace? How much do you want to spend?

How many pages per week do you print? Text only or graphics too?

Do you really want ONLY A PRINTER? Or do you want to scan-copy-fax too?

And, color or black and white?

Thank you for replying. Require a basic printer that uses color and black and white. The hp I now have copied also, which I used, but I do not require a fax. Also print recipes, letters for snail mail, plus pictures from my computer for use in building putz houses. I guess you could say nothing complicated...just an old gal using a printer for personal pleasure. Appreciate your help.

My PC's are all HP's and my main combo printer/scanner is a Canon Pixma (inexpensive) Walmart and it works great!

Like aputernut, I have and have had Canons. However, she said '(inexpensive)'. I think the ink is likely somewhat more expensive than others and that all inkjet printers these days that all do wonderful things are equally inexpensive. I like my Canon because it uses the same inks I had (more or less) and I understand them. I suggest that you get the same type that you are already familiar with.

I like to choose my all in one printer/scanner/copier based on ink price. I hardly print anything and the ink dries before it's used. We got an HP Deskjet 1510 a few years ago to print our taxes for around $100. I use the scanner more than the printer and replacement ink is $40 for a combo pack of black and tri color.

I rarely print a photo so out-of-the-ordinary capability is not necessary. Except for "important" correspondence I print documents in grayscale and Fast Draft. And, I avoid printing what I identify as frivolous.

So a HP A-I-O is just fine for me. The current printer, which I have had for eight years, is one step above "entry level".

Ink price is important as is demand, but usage protocols are too.

It is my belief users tend to over buy when it comes to printers and are their own worst enemy when it comes to waste.

One thing that frustrates us about the hp printer is the constant demand for printing of the alignment page which uses so much ink.

Which, canon or hp?

I am wondering about your statement, "Needs aligning often". I have an HP Photosmart 7520 and it holds alignment very well. I have run 1000 pages through it without needing realignment. Mine was trouble free until after the 10,000 th page when apparently, the photo-black jets partially plugged. It leaves 4 light streaks across the ink swatch on the test page. It still prints credible photos, but I'm sure there will be more trouble ahead since I can not get those jets cleared. It is possible that the contacts on the back of the print head are dirty and maybe keeping a couple of jets from firing, but clogged jets are more likely.

I like the printer well enough and the mechanisms seem free of play, that I may buy a new print head and install it. The other alternative is to buy a new printer since HP practically gives these away in order to rake in sales of the cartridges. However, this model is not available anymore and I like its size, very good print, photo printing, speed, and features and that it leads me to consider replacing the print head.
