Following along. I’m tired of shelling out a fortune for ink in mine only to have it dry way sooner than it should.

I like Canon printers but I haven't bought a new one for maybe 5 years. I use a Canon Pixma MX920. It's black and not particularly small. It cost $99 from Staples.

Whatever you get, don't spend a fortune on proprietary ink. I also had eventually bad results getting refills from Costco. I get mine from inkjets.com. I get double the amount for half the price, so I figure that's 25% of what I paid for Canon ink at Costco.

Most printers today are wifi ready. Works great. Print from your smart phone. Text docs are a piece of cake. With a little tweaking and the right paper, I can get pretty decent photos and artwork (frame-worthy) out of this printer.

I have a Brother HL-3140CW that I'm very happy with. It's a nice wi-fi color digital printer that has worked flawlessly with every device. I don't print photos. I tried that in the past with other printers and decided it's much easier to send them in electronically and have them printed at a photo place on the rare occasion I want a hard copy.

I looked into a lot of printers and read a lot of reviews and settled on this one. I haven't been disappointed. I always used to be an HP printer person but they didn't get great reviews when I was in the market and this one did. There is probably a new model number as I've had it for three years.

I just bought this one a couple of weeks ago for my WFH setup. It is super small! I also bought a second monitor since they were also on sale for great prices. It is B&W only. Adding color gets more expensive, as do the laser cartridges for each color. I really didn't care about color.

I just replaced my printer.. twice. I had an canon all-in-one. It worked great but always ran out of ink because i didn't use it enough. This is the major issue with inkjet printers... also, it was HUGE.

What I really wanted wasthis laser printer-- most of what i print are b/w documents and i want them to print quickly. I also wanted something fairly compact. This HP printer had great reviews-- and wow, it was a great price! So many laser printers are over $300.

Unfortunately, it wasn't available when i had a desperate and immediate need for a printer. I didn't want to buy one more round of ink for my then current printer.. so long story short, I bought theHP Tango Wireless and compact inkjet printer. My only complaint with the Tango is that it is an inkjet ... so again, if i don't use it regularly, the ink will dry up.

Almost immediate, the HP Laserjet Pro Mi15W came back in stock-- so i gave the Tango to my niece and i bought the laserjet! I only used it once thus far but it was very easy to setup and the print quality was fine. For very close to $100, i think it is more than perfect for my needs.

We have a newish Brothers printer that I am really liking - and this is from someone who always went with HP. It scans, copies and faxes as well. I do not use the fax feature but love the scan feature and use it quite often. It's a MFC-J470DW model.

I also would not waste color toner on printing photos and would go with CVS, Target, Shutterfly, or other app based printing services.

I highly recommend Brother printers. They are reliable and the ink generally costs less than HP or Cannon.

Probably no help at all, but my Canon PIXMA MP270 is still plugging away - it's a combo scanner/printer and makes beautiful photos. I don't use it heavily, but often enough that I've had no problem with ink clogging up. The cartridges aren't very expensive on the Canon website either - with no extra charge for shipping.

I have an old Canon i9100. It's at least 16 years old and I haven't changed the ink or used it in close to 8 years. I was going to chuck it and then tested it the other day. Works like a charm and the color's fine.

I also like Brother printers, especially for the price, and I also recommend getting one with a scanner.

If you want photo quality archival prints, get an Epson Stylus Pro, but it may not come with a scanner option.

I don't have a scanner in Cathedral City, and I wish I did. We have two in L.A., but I don't think I can convince Kevin to bring his here for the office, and I want to keep mine in L.A. as well.

Mine is an HP Officejet 3830. I’ve been very happy with it. I don’t print a lot, usually mailing labels, receipts, that sort of thing. The occasional letter. It scans and copies and faxes, not that anyone faxes anymore. I use it pretty frequently for copies. I’ve never printed photos. It’s so easy to order prints and the quality is better. The printer is wireless and it still amazes me that I can send things through the air to it!

I have an Epson Eco Tank printer. It has refillable ink, and comes with enough ink to last a long, long time if you don't print much.

Whatever you do, don't buy a very inexpensive one. My son didn't need a printer in college but did in grad school. He was trying to be frugal and picked a cheap one -- less than $50. It didn't work well, sounded terrible and went back. Same son just got a laser printer because the inkjet went through a period of non-use and had dried ink that couldn't be cleaned. I think you need to spend $100 to get something dependable either way and for occasional printing, laser printers are now more affordable and make sense. They do tend to be larger -- but not as large as they used to be. We still use an HP inkjet, but might be looking at a laser when it decides to leave us.

I purchased a Canon Color ImageClass printer 2 years ago. It is a Laser printer, and I've been very happy with it. It does seem to have gone up about $250 since I bought it.

I rarely print anything, and the ink in the desktops would dry out before I ever had the chance to run out of ink.

Edited to add-- the cost for replacement toner is LESS than the cost of 2 ink cartridges for my former HP printer. Makes the cost of a laser printer look a bit better.

Thank you all for your great suggestions. I went to Staples armed with my list only to find almost none available. Evidently there’s been a huge rush on printers due to remote schooling and people working from home. My second staples wasn’t much better and I ended up with an Epson. Not the highest priced but not the lowest. It’s got all the bells and whistle’s I need and was on sale from $179 to $119.

Curious, why would one want a scanner instead of using your phone?

Mtnrdredux, scanners are better if you are interested in archiving non-digital photographs. I also use my scanner for slides, which cameras cannot do.
