Looking to buy a printer - Have Questions

Last January we purchased our son a Dell Laptop computer (he graduated with a teaching degree). Today he landed a job teaching 1st graders in the Madison school system. We would like to get him a printer to go with the computer. He would want wireless, because his laptop is set up for that. (His older desktop, however is not and would not be hooked up if it is a hassle). I need to know what I should be looking for in purchasing a printer that will work with his laptop. I know that he will want to print photos, be able to print documents for school, plus a copier and scanner would be a huge plus.

I hope that I have given enough information. What I need to know is what information do I need to know when I walk into a store and inquire about a printer?

Also, any suggestions? What brand is best for the money including the printer cartridges afterward?

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop with a Lexmark 4850 WiFi printer and I love it. Very quiet, prints really good photos and is very easy to use.

I also vote for Lexmark. Mines not Wifi but after going through several HPs I love my Lexmark. Trouble free,intuitive and pretty frugal with ink.

okay, okay okay! I'm an I D I O T ! lol.. I called office depot and they said they had them. Well, I've spent 1/2 hour THREE TIMES looking around for them. They are NOT with the copier paper! I have been spending my time looking around all the "specialty papers".. glossy photo paper, glossy card stock.. etc.. it is with overhead projectors! AACCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKK! lol.. thanks! thank you Arsty! lol I went to office depot and bought there brand as it is WAY cheaper! lol....

My previous HP printers only used black ink when I wanted to print black and grayscale. Unfortunately, that's not the case with many new models which are designed to use a portion of each color ink cartridge when printing black. The printer will not work until the color is replaced; then it requires that the cartridge be charged which depletes additional ink from each of the cartridges. Since the bulk of my printing is black only, I'm researching black laser printers and plan to replace my Epson inkjet even though it works fine.

" I can't imagine why any canon printer wouldn't have drivers for newer OS." It's the same reason why Microsoft cuts off updates/support for old Windows versions after a set number of years, why Apple does the same for old OS versions (and even cuts them off from the iTunes store so that apps can't be updated or new ones added ), etc. Products aren't supported forever, rather only for a fixed period of time. New hardware and software versions aren't necessarily backwards compatible (ie, some can't or don't always work with old components) and so that new drivers might be disproportionately difficult to do. I remember some years ago, the industry standard protocol for scanners changed and i had to buy a new one when I got a new PC. There have been a number of protocols and standards that have been dropped over the years and replaced, thus orphaning the hardware that uses the standard that's gone out of favor. The end of driver support for new OS's is similar.

Many inkjet printers have 3 modes of print: Draft, Normal, and Best. Draft prints the quickest with each of the other two being progressively slower. The best or photo mode prints at about half the speed of normal. Actually, for normal and best, the print-head and jets are working at the same speed, but the best setting is making more passes, laying down more ink per area, and using its best interlacing. The usual setting is normal for most printing. Some users set their printer to draft mode as an ink saver for mundane and proof printing, and change to a better setting only as desired. The next time you print the file that is slow to print, before clicking on the final print button, check the printer properties to see if it is being set to 'best'. That would explain the slower print-out. Also, it is possible that after printing that file, your printer may retain its 'best' setting until you set it back.

Wow, hopefully Lexmark have improved their products according to the 2 votes above. Good news! Lexmark were once very good printers then they seemed to go to the cheap and nasty stuff. Just this weekend I removed Lexmark X4250 from my wife's computer, it was troublesome from day one and Lexmark offered no fix so I had to find my own cure.

I had other Lexmark printers that I was not impressed with, but this new one (came with my laptop) is very nice and much better than the other ones I had.

That is good to hear - I had 2 Lexmark printers that barely outlasted the original ink tanks - I went with HP and have been very happy. Hopefully Lexmark has improved their product.
