Need a new photo printer. What would you buy?

We are starting to look at new photo printers. We have a HP photo printer that I have liked but it's aging. Anyone have an Epson? Would like different points of view,sassyo

Hi Sassyo,

Yes, I have an Epson. I had a Lexmark before that, and I just got my Epson about 4 months ago. I love it better than the Lexmark. Not only that, but the ink on my model is half the price of the Lexmark I had, but lasts as long. It also prints BETTER!!

The model I have is "Epson Stylus Photo 925". I got it at Staples for around $125 on sale, but it was worth around $160. I wanted to make sure I didn't get a cheapie one this time. The color ink cartridges are about $23.00, and the black ink is about $18.00. But of course the new printer came with new ones.

Sassyo, I just ordered a new printer. My HP 930C died a couple of days ago. It picked a bad time to quit running as I was just starting to print my Christmas cards! I am ready for a new printer though, as I have never been happy with the quality of the HP prints. My first printer was a Canon and the photos were bright and crisp. So I researched the new Canons and chose the i960 Printer. All the user reviews that I read raved about the great quality of the printouts, especially when printed on photo paper. So I am anxiously awaiting my new printer (and new computer)! Good luck and be sure to let us know which printer you buy and how well you like it. I have heard great things about the Epson printers too.

I always believe good sellers are on Craigslist, the local paper or even ebay (locally) if they are - men over 30 who are in business like insurance or accounting and don't smoke. They , in my experience, offer good deals on computers and printers. Because they upgrade they got their value from the product and sell it , because they want a new one. If the old one is broken they usually give or throw it away. In my experience if there is a product I like then I try to buy another, used in good condition, because I know it, have suppliers, might have tips on how to make it work better, and might have supplies for it. I believe in staying with what works. If anything electronic still works well after a few years it's going to keep working well if it's clean and hasn't been taken apart by someone playing with it. Although I would clean the dust and replace the fans or be aware that I might have to replace them because their bearings do fail unless they're ball bearing (rare). Good luck.

I thought I'd report back for people who are still looking. I ended up getting the Canon Pixma MX850 (after seeing the review at pcmag.com which suggested that there were substantial improvements over the earlier model (they were not directly comparing it to the mx700, but rather a recent MP??? model. Nevertheless, it sounded like this 850 was better than what came before (the details about how skip my mind, but I know in readin it, it seemed worthwhile). I had someone set up the Canon on Friday. It is big (and as Jane said, it's attractive and seems commercial in quality). I LOVE IT. The software is not bulky like HP, and it was easy to connect the printer to my desktop, my daughter's, my husband's laptop and my laptop. I can scan documents and the wonderful lcd display will walk me through simple steps. It asks if I'm scanning from the platen or document feeder, if it should be saved to a pc or faxed or emailed (I believe those were the choices). Then you can choose which computer to receive the scan (that computer must be on to receive it - otherwise I think it could be sent as an email attachment to be loaded on the computer later), and whether it should be saved as a pdf file or jpg. There are other formats for saving it in as well but I haven't tried that yet. There's also a way to optically capture the text and turn it into a text document which I think can be edited (for those without the expensive Acrobat Writer which allows editing of PDF files but costs a few hundred dollars). I know some of the above is very simple and naive, but I've included for folks like myself who have no idea what they were looking for. It easily prints in color or black. It has a duplexer. I'm not sure I'll care that much about printing two-sided documents, but I love the either of feeding 2-sided documents in the ADF (auto document feeder) and being able to copy or scan them without standing there and changing pages. That was a huge factor for me in getting this over the MX700 which doesn't have a duplexer. At first I hadn't considered the convenience of copying and scanning 2-sided documents by loading the sheets in the ADF, pressing a button and walking away. That's convenient. This printer is also remarkably quiet. I was used to loud functioning from my HP PSC 950 and didn't realize printers could be so quiet. I could even carry on a business call without interference. I'm thrilled with this machine (which Dell has for $239 - best price I found). Even my husband who saw no reason for obsessing about this choice is amazed at how much functionality and ease of use is packed into a $240 machine. sayde, I echo remodelfla and lucypwd, but especially the comments from rococogurl & mtnrdredux. No, absolutely I would NOT buy a MARBLE slab from a photo. I almost did this--thought I'd found the perfect calacatta marble slabs also after a year long+ search & was giddy. I put a hold on them and drove 3 hours to see them, and thank God, because I did not like them in person! I recognized the overall veining patterns from the digital photos--the slabs were obviously the same, but the tones in the marble...some areas were pink which trust me did NOT come through in the photos! You don't need to tell us the amount here, but I'd weigh the deposit amount with the price/inconvenience of a plane ticket/trip carefully. If there is no other material you want--as you say-- and you don't like this slab, you'll be out your deposit anyway & still have to look elsewhere for this one marble you really want. I think, as mtnrdredux said, that is your answer. If this is your "forever" house and you're spending thousands of dollars for a marble installation, a few hundred dollars to see the material really is worth the investment. If this isn't the forever house--or you're not the miserable perfectionist I am!--that's different. This may seem contradictory to everything I wrote above, but I also want to say, you have to honor your limits too. If like me, you're burned out at the end of a lengthy remodel (we demo'd last April!) and you just want to be done it is perfectly fine to adjust expectations (stop looking for "the perfect" slab and just be thrilled you can get this marble you love) and just be done with it. I don't want to project onto you, but I've followed some of your previous posts and have identified with a lot of your struggles settling on a range, matching colors and tones, and I know given my level of perfectionism-perhaps yours?-you might feel better seeing this through and just seeing it in person before laying out the deposit $.

http://www.spray-onvinyl.com/ We have an old farm house that was built in 1897 that we considered using a spray on vinyl for. Our elements are not as harsh as a beach enviromant, with wind, sand and salt. We ended up having to replace all the siding with hardie plank and painted it, rather than pre-finished color. There are other companies besides this one, but it is something to look into to protect all that siding. Good Luck

You probably have your new printer by now...but if you don't ... Canon.

I was a devoted HP printer fan.

After my first digital Canon, and the little digital photo printer that made real photo postcards...not inkject, but layered laminated photos, I became a Canon nut.

They don't make much, but what they do make, they make well.

Canon was the thorn in Xerox's side for office copiers long ago.

I not only have their little photo printer that goes with their digital cameras, but I have their all-in-one scanner-copier-printer. My MP750 was dirt cheap at 129.00 because Canon is bringing out their new models.

This copier makes photos look better than the originals when scanned...it is an inkjet, though. What I can do with that machine is scary.

If you want to go even cheaper, the MP 390 is now only 99.00, (originally 200.00) it has all the standard inputs for flashcards and media, plus it is a fax, it however lacks a document feeder which is sorely missed when there are 200 or more sheets to copy.

I have the MP 390 also...great little machine.

These great prices I found at Amazon...Love the 750 (and individual ink cartridges for color...no more having to buy a large color cartridge when you only run out of one color!)

the MP 780 is basically the 750 with a fax.

I bought a HP 1600 scanner copier and printer. Its easy to use and get great photos and copys... office max ahd it for 99.00 and I really like it. If I can use it anybody can...

I have the HP three 1600. Not bad for the money. For photos, you're better off having them printed commercially. It's cheaper, and they will last longer. Lots of places, like Costco, you can upload the photo and pick it up in an hour or two. Or they'll mail them to you. Try a few plalces, because the quality varies. I'm a professional photographer, and this is what I do for all my regular, family snapshots.
