Shark Lift-Away Vacuum Models

So after spending hours reading about and trying to figure out the differences between the bewildering array of models, I thought I'd settled on the Rotator Lift Away Speed (special package on the Shark website with extra accessories). But then I discovered that it's not compatible with the powered Truepet upholstery tool (I was confused by the inclusion of a "pet tool" but it turns out it's just a lint brush type attachment not a powered turbine hand tool).

To be compatible with that tool, I think I have to get the Truepet Rotator Lift Away... but that model is nearly 16lbs and the Speed is 13lbs, which is the reason I chose it in the first place.

There are also only certain models compatible with the multi-angle dusting brush which is important to me, because I like to dust everything with the vacuum. The Rotator models were all compatible with this tool.

I'm pregnant and on lifting restrictions, DH is doing a lot of housework but I'd like to be able to vacuum and dust with the vacuum once in a while!

So I guess my questions are:

1. If you have the Truepet model, do you find it lighter and easier to use than other vacuums?

2. How useful is the powered turbine hand tool? We have 3 cats but a leather sofa, a microfiber chaise (these do not accumulate cat hair) but our dining chairs are fabric.

3. Tell me about your Shark Lift Away model and what you like and don't like about it!

I have the truepet. I love the powered tool. I use it for carpeted steps as well as upholstery and it works great.

I don't find the vacuum *that* heavy. But it is heavier than some. The lift away canister piece by itself though is easy to walk around with. So depending on how you use it and which tools for which job, the weight might not be a problem. If you're always dragging the whole thing around...could get tiresome.

I checked them out at BB&B the Speed model is nice and small and noticeably lighter, but I think that powered turbine hand tool is just too useful to miss out on... hmm maybe I will go to the Truepet model. It's still several lbs lighter than our Dyson...

I looked at mine, on the collar just below the hand hold is a ring called the suction release, it is labeled on mine and you turn it to get more or less suction it has the directions printed right on the machine at the suction release valve. Just look you will see it turn it while vacuuming till it feels right, don't forget to reset it for your other areas or you will think your vacuum isn't sucking up as well. And don't forget to take out the sponge filter below the removable dirt bin and clean it every few months.

Of the three different Sharks which I have, my favorite is the Rotator Professional Lift-Away 3-in-1 vacuum (Model No. NV501). It is red. It can be converted to a canister vacuum that rolls along, or a portable vacuum. It comes with a pet power brush that is great, and a bare floor nozzle. Mine came with the micro vacuum attachment, which is great for cleaning out sewing machines, computers, etc. That attachment may no longer be available, but can be purchased separately at Amazon.com - http://www.amazon.com/Micro-Vacuum-Attachment-Kit-Piece/dp/B000BSJCLY

I read all those reviews here too and ended up getting the one I've linked to below. I found ours at Costco for 160.00 but they don't carry it anymore. It's been a couple of months now and I have to say I like it. It cleans so much better than the Eureka canister we have. The pros: Hands down it has the best suction on rugs and when you turn off the brush it's fabulous on throw rugs. On wood flooring it's not perfect, but still better than most uprights. The cons: Between the strong suction and weight (it's sort of heavy) it can be hard to navigate. IMHO it needs (and I would have paid extra for) a self propelling feature. Socks, I don't have wall-to-wall carpeting, so you might be better off taking a look at the Amazon reviews. I don't think I'd choose this one as your only vacuum. I think it'll be great for Raven's RV, and I'm looking forward to using it on my second floor. But the dust cup is on the small side, as JoAnn mentioned, and if I used it for my whole house I'd be emptying it all the time. If I were you I'd get a Shark Navigator Pro, which is what I use downstairs. I think you'd be happy with the job it does on your carpeting.

I decided on the Speed - it's just exactly what I wanted and I was able to confirm that it IS compatible with one of the powered Truepet tools... but I tried out the air powered tool on our dining chairs and it worked great so not sure if I need it to be motor driven. It's lightweight and cleans well and I ordered the multi-angle dusting brush so I can dust with it.

I can imagine on carpets it would be tiring to use because the brushroll is so aggressive it pulls itself forward - on my area rug it was hard to pull back!
