Need lots of help with open concept decorating!!

Best way to decorate open concept,great room.Back of house is room 13 x 30. Right end is kitchen,left side family room no TV.Allthis is open & facing dining room then living room. Hard time placing furniture in family room. Should have bought some type of sectional but went with sofa. TYIA.Willtry to post pics later

Open concept living spaces are the absolute best, especially for families! I have decorated a couple and would love to share with you some of my work that dealt with open concept living spaces. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions about what I did.

Leslie- I really like the room! That corner banquette is charming : )

Jeanette- Think about how you want to use the spaces. So family room has no TV...is it for conversation, playing games, enjoying view outside? Do you have a lot of people over to entertain or just immediate family?

The way Leslie has decorated the room above, the banquette could be for meals, kids' snacks, playing games, having tea....a lot of things. It's a nice use of space and includes those activities with the seating area.

But other people might want a larger dining table behind the sofa (off the kitchen) and a large chair and ottoman in that corner, for reading books. So how do you plan to use your space?

Here is my first thought... Think about the floral chairs. You mentioned that you use tablecloths quite a bit. The floral pattern may limit using a pattered tablecloth - unless it's a stripe fabric. Something to consider... But I do like the chairs. I'm not crazy about using all upholstery, as in your second photo. Did you not like the silver tub chair from World Market? The only reason why I say this is because of the white chairs and white cabinet. If one is a brighter white, it may not look right. The metal is more like a neutral. Also - it looks like you have more red accents in your kitchen - the solid upholstered chair is more rust. Here is another patterned chair with more red tones: Also - when your guy makes the table, make sure he gives you enough overhang on each end (short ends) so you can get two chairs there if you want. As it appears now, you would be limited to one chair, sitting between the legs. I know what you saying ladies, it's always good to have an extra opening. I guess the way they looking at it if you awake, you can hear the smoke alarm and have enough time to escape simply put... If you sleeping you might not hear the alarm, and by the time you hear it and wake up, it could be too late, so each sleeping room must have an additional escape route or rescue entry point so the fireman can climb in and out wearing full gear. I can see in NY this being enforced more because most houses are attached and even single family homes are semi-attached or separated by the driveway... not to mention they make any hole in the wall habitable because they rent them for 1k a month... You see basements with a stove next to a bed and table and a clothes hanger and they get 1000- 1500 a month.

I would add a narrow console table something like this under the windows. You need a better room arrangement. Try flanking the fireplace with the chairs. Get a bigger rug, as large as the one in the rendering below, and pull both chairs so the front legs are on it. Lose the mirror over the mantel. It's not interesting and only reflects the ceiling. Find a big piece of art that you love and build the room around it.

I don't think a sofa instead of sectional was necessarily a mistake. Sofa plus chairs may give you more flexibility in your furniture layout. I have a sectional in my tv room and I love it, but there is literally only one spot in the room it can go, based on how the room is laid out. If i had a small sofa and two chairs, it would be a lot easier to change things up.
