Open concept dining room decor HELP!

This space has me stumped, as I don't know what to do with it. The two windows are the problem,
but I can't change them. The wall is 111" wide. Have looked at pictures,clocks, decorative decor.
There isn't a lot of space for a sideboard against the wall, but would consider. Would a chandelier
help?

5 years agoWe think just hanging a drapery panel over both windows will hide them and perhaps make you happier with your space. Also yes, a chandelier would very much help the space.

Comments (47)Here is my first thought... Think about the floral chairs. You mentioned that you use tablecloths quite a bit. The floral pattern may limit using a pattered tablecloth - unless it's a stripe fabric. Something to consider... But I do like the chairs. I'm not crazy about using all upholstery, as in your second photo. Did you not like the silver tub chair from World Market? The only reason why I say this is because of the white chairs and white cabinet. If one is a brighter white, it may not look right. The metal is more like a neutral. Also - it looks like you have more red accents in your kitchen - the solid upholstered chair is more rust. Here is another patterned chair with more red tones: Also - when your guy makes the table, make sure he gives you enough overhang on each end (short ends) so you can get two chairs there if you want. As it appears now, you would be limited to one chair, sitting between the legs. Comments (8)One way to make the space feel cozy yet spacious is to use color to help define the separate spaces. It helps make each area feel more like a room, yet seeing into what color defines as another room helps make it feel spacious. My lower level has an exercise room that's open to a music nook and the staircase. So I selected coordinating colors that I liked and defined the music nook with the beige wall and ceiling and the exercise area with the paladian blue wall and ceiling. I used the architecture and trim color to help define the tray ceiling and the column to help separate the spaces. The art helps tie the color scheme together. This way they relate, coordinate, but each provide their own separate purpose...cozy yet spacious. My mother's condo had a DR and LR open to each other so we picked a drapery fabric that had blue and orange accents in it against a taupe background. So we painted the whole area the taupe, and the lr wall opposite the dr a terra cotta, and the dr wall opposite the lr a blue. So again, with color the two rooms coordinated but the color scheme helped define each area making the coziness of two rooms with the spaciousness of one large room. I have my FR and kitchen and breakfast nook all in one open area, but in order to define the spaces separately to make the function clear and to lend more coziness, I again used coordinating fabrics and paint colors to define the separate areas. The FR and breakfast nook are in the beige/gold paint while the kitchen is in the rust. The valances in the kitchen and the breakfast nook contain both colors, but more rust in the FR and more gold in the kitchen. This way the color story gets told in both rooms, but in different proportions to define the spaces. The architecture of the soffit also helps to define the spaces. Comments (3)I have open concept with an island with a sink and after reading many threads here I scratched my plan to have clear glass and went with ribbed glass and a lens which spreads the light downward. You’ll need good lighting at the sink. Your inspiration pic has a large skylight and no sink in the island. I would not do a lantern type. Where is your dining room. Would it be the space from where the perspective originates? If it is, you could use a different color/material since there is some space separation with the wall opening. Comments (22)Ok, I'm sticking to my opinion pretty much as '''budget fix for now'' -- Leave the table turned and put the floral sconces on either side of the window. Move the sideboard down the wall, away from the window, to solve your problem about chair clearance. Move the extra chair to the opposite wall, flat against the wall, not angled, to help fill the space left when you move the sideboard down. Rearrange your framed art and maybe even plates over the sideboard, and add other things to the wall that might look nice that's related to food, wine and family. Personally I would remove the rug. Possibly also buy inextpensive solid color drapes (wine color?) for both windows rather than place the urn sconces on each side of the back window. If you bring in drapes for the windows, consider using just one of those sconces rather than 2 in the room. I like the "cup" light fixture! I think a chandelier would be great, but what style? I'm rather traditional.
Don't think the drapery idea will work. Would floating shelves on the wall
look good? What about a slender server?
