Time to finally ask for help
Comments (13)Actually tox, some of the best solutions for desert and arid soil have been developed here. Nearly impossible to get here though; it's almost exclusively exported to Africa, where it's been very successful. But more and more permaculture classes are being given, and more and more people know exactly what compost is, etc. Lots of community gardening groups in the larger cities and lots of small community building around saving the beaches or not polluting the water we have with better laws about waste management. Long long way to go but although the normal citizen is fairly clueless (about a great many things.......don't get me started!) it's no way as odd as it was to hear party chatter about these things anymore, and the NGO's that deal with the environment are mainstream and not ignored. Much. Hoo - I didn't rinse the seaweed, just glopped it on the pile and it didn't do - or at least I couldn't discern - any salt damage. And in Haifa, the whole city is on a mountain overlooking a bay (think San Fransisco), and our winter rains from Oct-March wash everything downhill into the sewers, then into the sea. Including any topsoil on any slope, leaving rocky bare lifeless layers of mud which will become hardpan and bake into concrete when it dries. Dotty: Kitchen waste? Probably not. Yet, anyway. But my upstairs neighbor saves her shower and cleaning water, and has a bucket under her AC spout. The other first floor lady is ripe for an AC bucket consciousness change; DG and I talked about getting her to do it yesterday. So far, they are pleased as punch someone finally is dealing with the space around the house, but differences in, um, style abound. Like one sweeps the dirt under the tree so it won't be dirty, and the other can't understand why worms are our friends and will hysterically kill anything she sees as an interloper into her sterile space around the house and stairs, and neither of them can fathom why I rake the leaves but won't throw them away in the dumpster. Besides things like that, they are good neighbors and cautiously interested from afar as they watch me dig the second compost pile. We've only been here a year, and we are going to have to all 4 of us completely replace the roof before winter, a huge expense, and I don't want to push my luck! Comments (5)I also encourage you to wait and take notice of the patterns in which you use your kitchen and what works appliance-wise and cabinet-wise and what is a worthless black hole and why it doesn't work. You also need to notice the quality of the light coming into the room at different times of day or whether you're using the lights all of the time. A lot of condos need nothing more then copious amounts of undercabinet lighting. You will need to find out if the countertop and existing backsplash can be removed without destroying the cabinetry. If you change all of these items, you will probably also want to replace the floor. You need to know what your condominium allows you to do without having the condominium board sign off on it first and any other special rules they might have about construction work. Also, you may want to consider a two-tone kitchen meaning that the lower cabinets stay dark (they are unkikely to show dirt, niice if you have children or pets) and the upper cabinets are all white. You also need to begin building your budget for all of these items. In my area countertops end up being $60 a square foot, it does not matter if they are tile, granite, quartz, solid surface, or sheet formica, A quick look at that list of countertop materials will show you that the time and materials involved with each countertop is markedly different but the pricing isn't, the weak explanation I am given for this apparent anomaly is that they have to pay their workers comp insurance....notice how that changes my budget? You need to do a lot of research first so that you were not taken by surprise....See More1st Time (Finally) Repotted Meyer, Please Advise!
Comments (29)Laura, any success thus far and down the line is mostly a result of everything I've learned from first, the people on the Container forum (Al and others), who taught me how to make my own mix, and from you and others--John, Mike, Vlad, and more--here on the Citrus forum, who inspired me to take another chance on a Meyer and have given me the knowledge I need to care for it. I've wanted a Meyer, and roses, for so many years, but felt it was impossible here; my first Meyer, some 4 years ago, was miserable almost from the start and died--I didn't know what to do for it and was terrified to re-pot it. I would never have had the nerve before to mix my own planting mix, or to bare-root a tree when re-potting, for example, and I've done it now with all my formerly sad potted roses and my two new citrus, thus far with great results! I've read both forums for days (mostly nights) at a time! and admired your beautiful healthy citrus trees--yours are gorgeous!--and learned so much from your experience. I hadn't gardened in years, and I have a very small very challenging spot, but these forums (also Antique Rose forum, where I'm spending a lot of time now) are the reason I am gardening now. My dreary little space is already transformed, since April, with herbs, strawberries, blooming and budding roses, flowering/scented perennials, and my citrus trees, and already I find many bees and butterflies visiting. It's incredibly rewarding and a great little retreat for me. THANK YOU ALL for your inspiration and help! Sheba...See MorePlease help me? :) Exterior paint color scheme.....running out of time
Comments (9)It is interesting to me. I thought I liked it as is, but the pictures you posted are fabulous lukki. I love the green. I would probably lean towards cream though too. I just find it jarring to have the front so different than the rest of the house. I actually do not like it at all, yet have somehow ended up in that kind of house twice in a row! the one i Have now has brick on the entire front and then White vinyl siding on the other three sides. Why? why? :)...See MoreRhonda Satterfield
