Hi again, I've done some more reading about house wrens. I assumed this was a Carolina Wren because of the distinctive white stripe from the eye. But I just read that house wrens have a white eye circle. I caught a still image from today's video and now I'm really confused! Linda... Hi! A couple weeks ago we noticed 2 Carolina wrens building their nest in our fern right outside of our kitchen window. We were so excited! Then a few days ago we no longer saw them around and sadly thought that they had abandoned their nest. This morning we were talking about removing the nest from the fern and when I peeked, I saw 5 eggs! Now we are concerned if they have abandoned their eggs :( Is this possible? We haven't seen them around at all. What time of the day do they incubate? Would it be possible that we are missing their timing? We are not morning risers. Agh! I'd be so sad if by any chance we scared them away :( We have been very respectful, however sometimes we would open the window. I do not know how long the eggs have been there. I thought that as soon as they were close to being done building their nest, they had left. Do they first build and then lay their eggs? Thank you so much!

For about 5 years there were a pair of Carolina Wrens who built a nest on our screen porch inside a grocery bag filled with other grocery bags that hung on a hook outside the kitchen door. The little rascals squeezed under the screen door through a space so small that until I saw one of them do it I would have said it was impossible. And each year when the nestlings fledged and left the nest there were always at least two of them who couldn't follow their parents under the door. My wife or I would have to leave the door hooked open so they could leave. Once it took three days for one chick to figure it out, even with its parents repeatedly coming in to lead it from captivity.

Carolina Wren update: Mommy Wren did return and there are a total of 4 eggs. I've been using the kitchen door with occasional use of the front door. This little lady is not afraid of me at all. I will softly talk to her, when I do go out that door, and I see no fear or nervousness in her eyes. I am anticipating babies any day now. This wren couple has been here since I moved in 4+ years ago. This will be my 5th Spring with them. The wheel well above my car's front tire has always been a spot they've picked for a potential nest. Its been a bit of a game with us. Every morning I would go out and remove the nest. By the time I woke up the next morning another would be in its place. Last Spring they chose a nest they built in a small storage shed by the kitchen door. Unfortunately, a snake got the eggs within 3 days. The Christmas Cactus that she is nesting in is one of a pair. They are equal distance from the edge of the wooden plant stand they are on. The stand is 3 ft high. They chose to build in the plant that is closest to the door. There had to be a reason for that. Thank you for all of your help.
