yes... a horrible idea... why cant you just plant them??? otherwise.. pot them.. and leave them outside... against the north side of a wall... to keep all winter sun off them ... and they will need a tree potting media.. not one heavy in peat .. too much water for trees in winter ... cactus mix would be perfect... or bark mini nuggets mixed 50/50 with a peat media ... and once watered.. just about never water them again in winter.. but make sure they dont dry ... dormant trees dont need a lot of water .... see.. that is why healing them into mother earth would be easier.. and cheaper.. in the long run ... a zone appropriate plant [this one is 5 to 9.. you are 6] .. does not need to be protected from cold ... and now is prime planting time... you are on the verge of loving them to death.. just plant them ... even if you have to move them in spring.. before they wake up .... see link for PROPER PLANTING.. and PROPER AFTERCARE... based on your soil if it were me.. and i couldnt place them in a permanent site.. i would HEAL THEM into the veggie garden... I always felt it was a tragedy that he spent the prime of his life behind the iron curtain and respected what he was able to accomplish when non-food plant production was frowned upon. My 3 'Barabits Requiem' are all over 6 meters tall with species typical trunks. Sapsuckers are constantly after them and although they often kill the 'Pendulum' selection with their holes around its slender trunk, they have little effect on these. Bob

Keeping the foliage dry in winter wet weather is also likely important (to stop bud rot), but not at all easy to do. Wiki says that they last a paltry 100 years out of their accepted conditions. I have a 45 degree slope which gives the idea of raised gritty beds that will flush through. Or would long term generous containerization be a way? These aren't big or fast growing plants, and they might not resent some root restriction as much as wet. I'm betting the specimen is from Kohouts so I wonder how they deal with the problem. I'll make a thread about it sometime. Top wet cover would also be easier in containers.

Hello all, 5 weeks later this is how things are doing. just a general view of the main part. and the aceratum (just kidding. 6-7 acers doesn't make an aceratum but it's fun thinking of it like that) 'Garnet', 'Katsura', 'Arakawa', 'Jerre Schwartz', 'Autumn Moon', 'Viridis', 'Orange Dream', Atropurpureum' close view of some new adittions under the shade of Cedrus libani (Acer palmatum 'Deshojo', Juniperus squamata 'Holger', Picea glauca 'Sander's Blue' Is this squamata 'Holger'??? and when I thought I decided on to what is the best color on a conifer, here came Abies nordmanianna 'Golden Spreader' with the almost "neon" shining colors to make me think again... 'Skylands' and it's brother Picea orientalis 'Early Gold' which I don't think it so 'early' given the fact that it is the latest bloomer I have along with my Sequoiadendron giganteum... Thuja occidentalis 'Golden Smaragd' on the path entrance. Pinus mugo 'Wintergold' with a pollen cone. and to finish with the yellow ones, one of my favorite Pseudotsuga menziesii 'Uwe's Golden' 'Rainbow's End'. Not much of a show this year, hoping for more next year or so... Abies koreana 'Kohout's Ice Breaker' along with Picea glauca 'Liliput' Abies koreana 'Bonsai Blue'. Lost some color over the winter. Abies lasiocarpa 'Compacta'. Lost a branch but overall seems vigorous. Pinus mugo 'Mughus' showing great variations... Picea pungens 'Glauca Globosa' with it's bigger brother 'Hoopsi' and last, one of my blooming rododendrons with Taxus baccata 'David' and Cedrus libani ssp atlantica 'Glauca' in the background.
