do you know whats the main difference between those cultivars?

Sequoiadendron giganteum 'Barabit's Requiem':
"This selection of weeping Sequoia is not as strict as 'Pendulum' and the foliage is coarser, giving what we consider to be a more pleasing appearance to the whole tree. It grows about 1' per year."

I have grown both of these cultivars in my garden: they could not be confused with each other. Pendulum is a very strict weeper, with the branches hanging vertically down the trunk...and frequently seen as grotesque specimen, gowing in every direction,(unless staked). Barabit's Requiem is much more uniform and predictable, with the branches flaring out at the ends. Mine did not require staking to grow upright. Both were quite fast growing...Barabit's Requiem being the faster of the two, giving at least 18" after a few years.

steg.. I apologize for missing your last question to me.. sorry! I actually can not tell you for sure where it is in that I was searching myself this summer. I was told by Bremecs Greenhouse in Chesterland Ohio that they were planted in a nearby garden. I dont know if it was owned by the clinic or owned by the city of Cleveland in part of the Cities economic revitalization project where they tear down old structures and plant public gardens. I know the nursery manager at Bremecs had told me that they were doing well because they had requests for the Sequoiadendron Pendulum and were going to be getting them in for Spring 2011. I have one on hold to try. My honest opinion is that *most* Sequoiadendron should be hardy along Lake Erie in that the area is fairly urbanized and increasingly Lake Erie does not freeze over which allows for more moderate temps. My own personal experience is that humidity and clay soil are much more problematic than cold to them. I do believe that the CBG and the Holden Arb in Kirtland, Ohio have Sequoiadendron, but I dont think they are "Pendulum" rather they are the species or a blue cultivar. I have seen very large Cryptomeria throught NE Ohio as well as an increasing number of Blue Atlas Cedar and Cupressus arizonica, which are still marginal but seem to do very well in the protection of the city. There are some 30-40ft Cedrus atlantica Glauca, Cedrus deodora Shalimar, and Sequoiadendron Hazel Smith at the Stow Sancturetum in downtown Stow, Ohio (Akron suburb). This year I saw a few, young but very much thriving (must have survived 2008 coldest in 15 years), Cedrus deodora and Cedrus libani at the Israeli Garden in the Cleveland Cultural Gardens at East Blvd. and Martin Luther King Blvd., between E 88th St. and Euclid Ave. There are some larger Cryptomeria and Sciadopitys which is fully hardy at the Secrest Arboretum in Wooster Ohio. They are more known for their collection of Ilex Opaca but also have some nice conifers, though the Secrest was allegedly damaged by a tornado this past fall.. I have not seen it since August of '10, prior to the tornado, when it looked very good. On a side note, I am very impressed to see some fairly good sized Magnolia grandiflora showing up in Ohio, especially after a very bad winter in 2008. There must be 25 planted at the Akron Zoo along with various types of conifers and unusual bamboos.

a few other choice selections from Glacier's End. Cedrus libani 'Beacon Hill.' Its provenance is questionable. There's a Beacon Hill Park in Victoria, BC which is perhaps where the plant was found. If so, we can also infer that Gordon Bentham was the guy who found it. Puchased from Coenosium Gardens long ago. Sequoia sempervirens 'Mt. Loma Prieta Spike.' A strict weeping Coast Redwood. This is an Buchholz & Buchholz product. Chamaecyparis lawsoniana 'Imbricata Pendula.' Another Buchholz product. This is grafted onto Buchholz's own phytophthora-resistant understock, which explains why I have such a healthy specimen in Western Washington. Yes, there is a tree in there. Here's one of my Picea omorika 'Pendula Bruns.' For now just try to concentrate on the eccentric behavior on the leader. The bald spot in the middle is from some buck rubbing last fall. Dirtslinger-Where do you live? I'd be interested to know if it was the winter temps, or the summer humidity or drought that killed it. lp-That's the way it looks as though I am going to go. Everybody's comments have given me the idea that with a little (OK, maybe a lot of) babying it has a very good chance at survival. There were a few things shipped to me very late last fall and we already had snow on the ground so I wintered about 8 trees over in the garage. All but one made it, and I think that may have been my fault anyway. I had stuck them out in front of the garage to get morning sun in march, and we got a cold snap and hard frost, and that one was already pushing new growth. It was also the largest, and maybe it took the brunt of the frost? Just a theory... Nikki-Thanks again for all the great info. I'm going to give them a call today and see what they can tell me. They have been selling the Blue Atlas's in Lima area for several years now. However they are selling them at about 6' but in the "serpentine" form, where they bend them left of center then right of center and back and forth all the way up. I had been debating one for about two years now, but don't really like that look. Not that there is anything wrong with it, I just don't care for it. So I finally ordered a smaller on this spring and got it in the ground. From ppl. I've talked to around here, they've had no problems with them. Thanks again, and keep me posted on the ones in Cleveland if you find them. I would really like to check them out. Dax-Thanks for the enlightening info. If there was any doubt about at least giving it a shot (I think I had my mind set already though) you dispelled it. I like your comparison to the PNW! Therefore, I think I may have come up with an action plan. Get the big one this fall on sale (Hopefully it's still there) as well as order a small one and put it in the nursery, and see it I have better luck with one over the other. I can always find a spot for the smaller one down the road, or give it to someone. Keeping it moist wont be problem. As much as I complain about watering, at times I find it relaxing, hose in one hand, beer in the other at the end of a long day just unwinding. Unfortunately, I don't have low spots in my yard. North West Ohio is pretty darn flat. Supposedly there is only like 10 or 12 ft. of vertical drop from the northern border of Allen Co. (I'm about 5 miles from the line) to Lake Erie. By building up my waterfall/stream in front of the intended spot (about 4' High), will that help protect it from frost? All of the elevation changes have been made by me with the exception of a ditch between the house and barn, but it has standing water in the spring time, so that rules out about 95% of possible trees. You also mention the protecting trees to the south and SW, they are large Oaks, with most of their leaves off in the Winter, will they still provide some protection from the winter sun? If that's the case, (filtered sun) I doubt that it would get much direct sunlight during the winter. Just making a guess, Maybe an hour or two in the Morning once it gets past the house and barn, then it hits the big oaks to the south and south west, and then maybe another hour or so in mid afternoon when it reaches a gap in the oaks, hickory's, and walnuts before hitting the woods to the SW and west. As for the Cryptomeria, I wintered a couple over in my nursery last winter, and have planted several this year. The ones I wintered over survived with no problems, however, my Black Dragon has a little browning on it. It was very large though. Probably 30-36" when I received it in late May or so. I think I may have given him to much water earlier on, I let it dry out for a while, and gave it a nice watering this morning. I agree with you on Darren's watering idea. I think that is absolutely brilliant. It is a trick I def. plan to try out. I'm a little over halfway (North) between Cincinnati and Toledo, but as far as what I have planted so far, with the winter we had last year, I'm amazed that I didn't lose more than I did. I think I only lost three trees last winter/spring. A pine came out beautifully, but gave up in late spring, a red bud I planted last Nov. (came dormant, so I'm not sure if it wasn't stressed/dead/dying to begin with) and a Jap. maple that was stressed last fall budded out and then a hard frost got it this spring. Then the Ash Borer has gotten a beautiful ash that was out by the deck. Prob. 10-15 yrs old. I'm pretty sure they have signed it's death sentence. I've been trying for two years to keep it alive, and the only way for it to look any worse next year would be to die completely. If it doesn't look any better, it's coming down next spring. L d pendula is easily staked to whatever height you wish ... and will go back down from there ... [L kampheri is a look alike and usually confused in the market... 6 of this.. half dozen of the other .. either will work] but it is deciduous ... which i think is cool ... if you dont go with a true pendula.. no conifer ever really stops growing in height ... so all others will .. eventually overgrow your wishes .... you will get much better suggestions.. if you offer us a pic of the spot ... the difference between an old name.. and a newer name.. is usually 20 dollars or so ... lol .... 15 pounds for you i suppose .. lol ... the bruns has vast potential in height... and do understand.. that MOST height estimates are at 10 years... and it will easily be twice as tall at 20 ... except for the true pendulas that are trained to height as noted ... ken

Thanks, so 'Barabit's Requiem' is the plant i am looking for, because i don't want to stake the tree and don't want to have an 'Arching-down-monster' some day.

The site you linked was from Bob Fincham, If that is what he says, you can bet it's true... I am not familiar with 'Barabit's Requiem', but have 2 'Pendulum'. One is about 7' tall, and the other is a 2 yr. graft, only about 10" or so. I love the tree and it's uniqueness.

We'll see how they do in my climate, the 2 yr. is buried under about a couple feet of snow right now.

Well, i am just questioning myself how Bob Finchman can be sure that the trunk will become so massive like the species?
As far as i know 'Pendulum' is a fairly old cultivar from 1860 or so.
What about 'Barabits Requiem'?

Well, 'Barabits Requiem' was selected as a seedling of a 'Pendulum' around 1972. Dr. Barabits introduced 115 cultivars during his life and some others were published by his sons after his dead. He was a talent and had a great work in forestry and gardening. This cultivar became famous fast such as ab. alba 'Barabits Star', ab. nord. 'Barabits Compact', Cham. laws. 'Globus', 'Mini Nova', Crypt. jap. 'Barabits Gold', Picea abies 'Tompa', Picea pungens 'Edith' /it is the name of her wife/, Thuja occ. 'Spiralis Mini'... etc. The list is long, if you are interested I can send it to you.
'Barabits Requiem' is a nice plant which becomes more attractive by years thanks to the massive trunk.

How massive was the trunk you have seen? Do you have any pictures?
I already have a list of Barabits cultivars, not complete but enough however. Thanks anyway.

I just would like to know how far away from the house should it be planted? Are 2 meters okay? I hope its not getting as high and as wide at the base like the species.

I don't have a 'Barabits requiem' yet... but the net is full of pictures...
I think 2 meters is almost okay, but as an architect I must say you have to be more cautious. You have to protect the groundworks of that house. The root system of a sequoia can be wide. A big tree next to a building is never good.
If I were you I would plant it as a solitaire in full sun. I'm sure I will plant mine this way.

I think Sequoiadendron next to the house is not the best idea:-). They just can become too wide at the base...

But what about Sequoia sempervirens cultivars? They will not get that wide at the base (in comparison with giganteum:-). Did you know that there is also a pendulous form called 'Loma Prieta Spike'?

I saw a number of his original plants when Mesterhazy Zsolt and I visited with him a number of years ago. I always felt it was a tragedy that he spent the prime of his life behind the iron curtain and respected what he was able to accomplish when non-food plant production was frowned upon.

My 3 'Barabits Requiem' are all over 6 meters tall with species typical trunks. Sapsuckers are constantly after them and although they often kill the 'Pendulum' selection with their holes around its slender trunk, they have little effect on these.

I am in zone 6-6a and never had luck with Pendulum, but see that 'Barabits Requiem' is listed as zone 6.
Has anyone been growing 'Barabits Requiem' in zone 6 and how has it done? Looks liike full sun and well drained soil. Any other location recommendations.

Jan I can't say that I really pine (sorry!) for snow, but that photo of the Sequoiadendron wearing the snow frosting is so lovely that I almost wish it snowed here....once in a while....

Mr. Barabits passed away in 2003. Our visit with Bob happened in 1999.
Some years earlier I published his Life Monument with 208 conifer cultivars. Some 30-40 of his selections came abroad, these are today well known conifer cultivars. Krussmann, Horstmann, ClÃÂ©ment Anthoine, some dutch nurseries as Bomer, Nijnatten also introduced some of his conifers. All others are lost - 50 Thuja occidentalis dwarf seedlings and brooms, 50 Picea pungens brooms, which we saw there with Bob in 99.
