What is the best finishing solution for a "roll in" shower?

We are getting bids on adding a "roll in" or "walker in" shower AKA no steps all flat, to our downstairs powder room. The shower will bump out into the garage. From the powder room (floor tile will not change) you will walk in, turn right and there will be no door. The shower will be at the end about 5' from the door. no splashes in the main powder room. I just want to be contemporary but safe. I was thinking smooth travertine. What do you think?

Edited to state that we will not change the floor tile in the powder room, which is sort of beige y white and neutral and runs through the entire downstairs. The shower is separate. Whatever treatment the floor gets will go on the walls. It can't be slippery.

I am in the process of doing exactly the same thing. Just drawing up the plans. Our contractor is coming on Thursday to discuss.

Tile for a shower floor must be wet location rated -- it's a special thing. Alternately, it needs to be small pieces which is why hex and mosaics are seen so often.

I found a porcelain tile which is very reasonable and wet rated. That's going down with heating underneath. I'm planning a 36" opening for the shower which will go across the far end and using a linear drain so the shower will drain fully.

I'm using different tile on the walls and floor and I'm also tiling the shower ceiling vs doing an accent wall.

Travertine is not be a choice I would make for a shower floor. We have a honed marble tile floor in our shower upstairs. It's very slippery, needs sealing twice a year and requires a fairly ugly rubber mat. Not going there again. But everyone has different ideas.

To not be able to touch the existing floor, you will need an internal 48" shower depth dimension as the smallest size that will satisfy the needed slope requirement to a trench drain at the steeper allowable 1/2" per foot. Otherwise, you will have to rebuild the entire room as a wet room.

The COF of the tile needs to be .6 or greater. You can even do a single slab of flamed granite as the shower floor surface of a barrier free shower if they can get the COF right. You do not need small tiles at all unless you would be doing a center drain, or the tiles do not satisfy the COF requirement.

From your description, I would tend to side with antss and do nothing. It sounds like you worked very hard to do a nice tile job and I think sticking something on top might make it look cheap. However, if you need something here are some ideas. 1. Take off the top row of subway tile and trim it out with the black trim you have along the shower wall sides. 2. Find some small wood trim pieces (maybe quarter round or really tiny 1" or so crown moulding) and paint them black and trim out above the tile.

This one is from my own sweet mom, who is mother to 9 of us. To save on bathroom storage space ~ which, let me tell you, was at a premium with 9 kids! ~ she gave us each a simple, inexpensive, plastic tool-type caddy to keep our own personal bathroom necessities (toothbrush, comb, brush, etc. ) in. They were stored on a shelf in our bedroom closets, to be carried in and then back again, as we needed them. This helped a lot to keep our bathrooms uncluttered and organized. Mom also bought one of this type of plastic baskets for each kid to catch of our dirty laundry. She wrote our names on each of them. The plastic made it easy to keep clean and the holes kept our dirty clothes somewhat aerated . . . which really helped with our brothers' stinky things (LOL). Polymeric sand is the routine method these days and it has many benefits. It's also relatively easy to use if you follow instructions on the bag. Some polymeric sand can even be used in gaps as big as 1/2". A sealant would be a very unusual approach to filling paving gaps, though in a couple of specific instances I have used an elastic, acrylic caulk. Definitely not silicone. If your gaps are big enough to receive gravel larger than chips then it's probably time to have your patio re-set.

My dad had a garage workbench and a pegboard behind it on which he hung all his tools. He put other things (e.g., paint cans, pool supplies) on open shelves so they'd be easy to find and mounted very deep shelves high over the hoods of the cars -- which I used to crawl around in. I don't have a garage but I like Closet Maid adjustable wire shelves and I put stuff I want to keep together (e.g., sandpaper, paint brushes) in clear bins of various sizes, some with lids and some without. I have a tool box for my tools; I'd get a tool chest if I had a lot. There are wall-mounted stands for bikes.

Thanks for posting that @SophieWheeler. Thought the one I'd picked at Home Depot was OK for shower use. Just running it across a 6-foot bath But the COF is .5 only. Headed out to the tile store to see the .6s.
