I see that tub is 64"long, 36"wide, 25"deep. Definitely pay attention to all dimensions.

I have only a builder-basic 60" tub, and its length is fine for me and my husband; I'm 5' and he's about 5'10. We've talked extensively on tub size/type, and he's never indicated any desire for a longer tub; of course, your husband is a little taller, but the tub you're looking at is also 4" longer.

My husband declared his great and abiding love of a certain tub in a certain resort (I measured it, and -- as I said -- we've talked extensively about it). He loves it because it has a built-in back rest, seat and molded arm rests. Here's a pix of the one we plan to buy:

This is not the one from the hotel. That one is 42" wide (42"?). I like to read in the tub, and this was too wide for me to use the arm rests -- well, I could scoot up to one side, but then I'd be too far from the other side. I found it uncomfortable to use one and not the other. He and I agree: We like the arm rests, but the wide tub isn't for us.

We both love the deeper tub. Our rationale is that you can always run just a bit of water if you like, but you can't get a good, deep soak in a builder-basic tub.

We plan to add the integrated grab bars. At any age, I think those are a good idea in such a deep tub.

That Bain Ultra ESTHESIA tub is beautiful! I looked at the specs and the interior length looks to be 49" which I think will be very comfortable. I have been trying out tubs for some time and have been very focused on that interior length. That seems perfect for me and I am 5'4". I also like the slope of the back. Do you have price for that tub you can share?

Mrs Pete - I am also looking for an alcove tub that will be a comfortable soaker and I like the one you pictured. Can you please share the make/model? And do you know what the one in the resort that your husband liked was?

You should look at the interior dimensions but I don't think 36 exterior width is too wide.

The picture I shared above is the Ultra Bain Amma 6030 (60" long, 30" wide). Essentially the same size as a typical builder-basic tub ... but sporting upscale features.

The one with which my husband first fell in love was made by Hydro Solutions and was either The Cassi or The Vanessa -- though I think it was a slightly older model because it was a little longer, included integrated grab bars and the corners were square -- or perhaps it was made specially for the large resort where we've used it.

When the two of us started talking about it, we decided this was much too large for practicality at home: It holds 90 gallons! The reality of such a tub is that you have to have an over sized water heater ... and then the tub takes forever to fill and cools off quickly because of the large water surface.

This tub started us searching, but -- in the end -- it wasn't the one we wanted.

Definitely too wide. Need evidence? I just measured my super comfortable old recliner chair from arm to arm (meaning the exterior to exterior -- the whole width), and it's 31" wide. It's comfortable because it's just right for my arms to rest upon. The tub I described above (the one from the hotel) was too wide: I couldn't put my two elbows on the two arm rests at once -- they were too far apart, which made it hard to read in the tub.

Assuming you're of normal size, wide isn't a particularly useful feature; on the other hand, deep is quite nice. Over sized tubs may be easy to find, but since when is easy to find a measure of what's best?

I have to disagree with Mrs Pete about the 36" width being too wide. You can't go by the exterior dimension of the tub. I'm 5 -4 and have short arms. The most comfortable tub I've found so far was a Mansfield soaker that was 42" wide with arm rests. Profit 4268 ov model. If you looks at the specs, you can see that the armrests are interior to the frame. And they felt great to me! I just wasn't too keen on the looks of the tub for my application or I would have bought it in a heartbeat. Inexpensive and make in the USA too.
