Sorry kitchen folks- Do you have a Air or Jetted Bath Tub?

I am posting here b/c i see all the wolfs/dacors and fancy kitchens so i'm figuring maybe you decked out your bathroom too!! We are building a house and i'm soooo confused.

I want a luxury tub... Do you have air or jetted-- do you like it or not like it? I'm specifically looking for 70-72 inches long-- and 42 wide-- Right now leaning towards Pearl... or jacuzzi brands...

I would love any info you might have (and pics too!)

We went to several kitchen and bath showrooms when we were building our homes (one for us and one for my Mom and Dad)
My son who is 6'4" and has mobility issues (uses a cane and mobility scooter) actually researched tons of them before we went to look. We went with the Maax. We are VERY happy with our tubs. Here is a link to them.

susie- i'm glad you are asking- we need to make this decision too.

cdecker- your home is beautiful- I have been admiring your kitchen for quite some time. Do you happen to remember the finish on your cabinets- such a warm color and the copper sink is beautiful!

Unlike bathtubs, hot tubs aren't for bathing. They are for relaxing. People are supposed to be clean before they get in. Since soap or detergent should never be used in a hot tub, it doesn't have to be drained after each use, but germicide is still required to keep bacteria in check. Adding germicide to a bathtub for each use would be an expensive hassle, in my opinion. How well the germicide would interact with soap or detergent is an unknown.

Dreambuilder - I went through many of the same thoughts as you. I do prefer the feel of water jets over an air bath. I seriously considered a Sanijet but had concerns after reading of another GWer having to replace motors... after having leaks! (in my install detecting leaks would be difficult). Then I saw one in person and was put off by what looks exactly like a drip tray underneath the tub. The Sanijet person I was working with denied it was a drip tray but couldn't give me a satisfactory reason why it existed. So I turned to investigating the ozone methods of disinfection several whirlpool tub manufacturers have implemented. I decided to go with a Neptune whirlpooltub. Their ozone disinfection begins after the tub is emptied and the ozone is injected directly into the tubes... unlike most manufacturers who inject the ozone into the bath water to be pulled through by the running jets. I'm a nerd and read several ozone studies before making my decision. I will also use a product that claims to prevent a biofilm from forming. Not as easy to confirm this will work due to the proprietary compounds in the various products. But I know it is possible, given the right ingredients. I did consult with the inventor of the product I chose and he sent me some of his data as well as confirm there wouldn't be a problem combining it with ozone. Now, I can't tell you if I made the right choices yet... my bathtub has been sitting in my living room because the bathroom reno was delayed - hopefully a mid February start at this point! Whether you ultimately choose a whirlpool or an air tub, if you can, try to sit in a number of tubs to find what fits you best. I'm lucky to live within an hour's drive from a tub showroom that boasts to have over 400 on the floor! While there I also discovered that with my hard well water keeping air injectors open and de-calcified could be a chore. Good luck!

Ginny, I have recently invested in an Aquatic Airjet Serenity 2, but it is not yet installed. The most that I can personally tell you is that my contractor guys sat it out on the patio to test it for leaks, and we all stood around smiling watching the 'effervescent bubbles' fizz. It passed the leak test and "it works!" test with flying colors. I took pictures ... it was a milestone in my remodel... something worked! Just kidding. :) I will tell you what the friend who recommended Aquatic to me said however. She loves it. Said the bubbles sensation from an Airjet are amazing, very relaxing. I have heard that the blower on an Aquatic is fairly quiet; that the water bubbling makes a greater sound than the blower. Also the '600 Watt Air Heating System' that comes with the product insures that you feel only WARM air entering the tub. Someone who has another product posted that the air entering her tub was cold and she would have preferred not feeling that sensation. However, important to me was not having to be concerned about bacteria from water circulating through the tubes that sometimes occurs with a hydro jetted tub. Although there are cleansing tablets that you can use to clean a jetted tub, I did not want to have to remember to do that. Airjets only use a blower to blow air into the tub, causing the "champagne bubbles" and then after use, a blower comes on to 'dry out' the system. In your case, you would like a hydro-massage, as well. I have heard only good reports about Aquatic, which is why I puchased, and the Infinity Series offers both. I don't think the cleansing issue is a big deal for conscientious people, I just don't want to be conscientious anymore. :) In another month, I hope to be able to give you a personal recommendation. In the meantime, Ted at the link below (Olde Tyme Hardware) is very knowlegeable about Aquatic and other brands. He has very good pricing, as well. Best of Luck.

Hi Raehelen , as you might want to know , I am not done with my MB Reno yet . The so called GC and his workers managed to do wrong or damage what was done right in everything in the bathroom . I don't want to start this conversation on this thread . I just want to let you know that I placed my tub filler on the tub deck itself so I won't drill in my marble . I placed it on the side along the wall . This makes using the handheld shower easier from both sides . I will post a picture for you tomorrow . I am not an expert , but I think that all the tub faucets are called tub fillers . I can't tell you anything about using the air tub since I didn't use it yet because my .... GC did not connect my controller to the motor and they closed in front of the tub with a solid wood panel . ( this is one thing of the things done wrong )

As an aside--and I'm sure all of you know this already but it came as a surprise to me--you have to make sure you're specifying heated jets. My boss just bought a tub and no one told her that the default was unheated jets, so she was surprised to be sitting in her new tub and feeling the water getting cold really fast. I never would have guessed to even ask, since, like my boss, I would have just assumed that since it's a bathtub, meant to be used with hot water, the jets wouldn't be shooting out cold!

I've already taken out one jetted tub, and when I get around to renovating the master bath, will take out that one. I think the jets are kind of yucky-- you can't clean there. Also, my jetted tubs are fiberglass, which I dislike. Maybe some jetted tubs are porcelain but I haven't seen one.

I have a small (5') air jet tub. When I do the bath in our other house... I will definitely get another one. I did not want a whirlpool type because I like to use bath oils and salts. You can't on those... clogs up the plumbing. The air jet is nothing to clean since they're little pinholes. I have a somewhat low end one but it does have an integral heater. I LOVE LOVE LOVE it My next one I want to step up a bit. I stil only have 5' of space but that works since I'm only 5' tall. GO for it!

I have a large 2 person jacuzzi 6 foot tub. It is the bellavista. It has 8 jets and an in-line heater. The heater is a must as the water stays nice and hot.
I love the big tub and am planning on getting a maax kashmir freestanding tub for my new home. It has air & jets. The new tubs have the drains for the jets at an angle so they drain better. That was the problem with most of the bacteria build up. My tub is about 5 years old.
I also have an outdoor hot tub that I can't live without.
I have chronic pain and they both do wonders for my health. I highly recommend them both.
I know that the big tubs take up a lot of room in a bathroom, but it all comes down to want you want. It is a choice that I have been very happy with.

We have an American Bath Factory 72" jetted acrylic clawfoot tub. If you're interested, you can see a picture (although not a great one) here.

I don't use the jets that often, but I'm glad they're there when I need them. :o)

We have a Jetta, whirlpool, which I love. I was sold on it because there is no heater, but the tub is so well insulated that it is guarenteed to hold the temp for 1/2 hour before losing any heat. And it is quiet in comparison to some. Losing heat has never been a problem, it outlasts me.

My only caution is to try the tub out, and make sure it fits. You'll know it when you feel it. The other thing to look out for is arms, if you like to read in the tub. They are great.

Air jetted tubs create more of an all over body massage while water jetted tubs tend to hit specific areas of your body. Water jetted tubs have problems with algae and slime that build up in the jets. Must be routinely maintained. Air jetted tubs have none of those maintenance issues. Bain Ulta is the leader in air tubs. It was quieter than the Maxx tub I compared it with. They are acrylic instead of fiberglass. An option I went with is chromatherapy (colored lights in the tub).

Thank you! The cabs are Starmark American Cherry Brittany finish. I am really happy with them. They are easy to clean and don't show the dirt and smears even though they are fairly dark.
