Deep red roses for a hot climate
Comments (11)This subject interests me, too, since here in Italy we have serious problems with the heat.I just got Climbing Crimson Glory (I dislike shrub HT's with their awkward, graceless growth habit, but am hoping that in the climbing form this won't be such a problem). My experience with Austin's Falstaff is that this beautiful rose does NOT crisp in hot sun, and it's colour-a very deep purple-red-is so unique. Likewise Tradescant seems promising. But, Daisy, why not take a look at Becky and John Hook's roses ?(La Roseraie Du Désert is the name of their nursery). They have an excellent selection of roses adapted to our hot climates:chiefly teas, chinas and noisettes. My experience with them has been so excellent, I can't recommend them highly enough. I bet they could ship to Crete. Their roses are own-root, so they may appear a bit small to you if in the past you've only had experience with grafted bare-roots, but these are top quality plants IMHO. I just grow the smaller plants along in a vase for their first season,so they get nice and big, though I think this is a matter of personal preference. regards, bart...See MoreLooking for a red rose red hybrid tea
Comments (37)I looked at Kardinal on an image search and some of them look red, but some look pink and some look more orange. I think the camera, the culture, and the lighting conditions influence the photographs so it's hard to tell which is really true red. I used to have an American beauty growing up, I thought it was really red, but now I read it's on the pink side. It was not a hybrid tea, it was more like a big huge bush with red roses on it. It's probably good to go to rose shows and nursery to see them in person before selection a color that is the red that you want....See MoreI.D. deep rose-red dahlia
Comments (2)Hi Instar--Heck no, go up to the door and ask. What can it hurt. We have over a hundred Amish in our family and I'll bet if they don't know the name of that dahlia I'll bet they would go out of their way to find out. Hey, the worst that can happen you'll get run over by a buggy. Steve in Baltimore County....See MoreLooking for a deep, true red semi-miniature (no purple undertones)
Comments (10)Rob's Love Bite is an excellent red and a true mini. It also grows symmetrically. You should be able to get it from the Violet Barn or maybe from Lyndon Lyon's. If you are only going to buy one and want to get it right on the first shot, then this is a good choice. It is a bit on the dark side, the leaves are small, graceful, pointed and dark. It Also check some of the Mac's that Su and Karin mentioned. Just Jeff, is considered to be a true red. My research is probably out of date, as many more reds have come out since I first began researching the "perfect red." The Mac series are noted for reds and minis. You can find many of them on the Lyndon Lyon's website under minis and semi-minis. Violet Barn specializes in minis, so you might find some there, also. You are correct, 4Blossoms, there is no such thing as a true red like a rose. also unusual. As Lucky has pointed out, Optimara has a lot of different reds. Sometimes you can find them in retail stores. They have both true reds and wine reds. Now that this has been "read," I edited it because there are newer reds out there I have not tried yet!
