Buying at a Big Box store
Comments (36)Hi Lucky, Yes, I saw your explanation about the bugs. I don't have any experience, so I suggested you might want to see if your county where you live has an agricultural extension society and call them tomorrow. If the BBS are charging $10 per plant, then they must be very hard to get and rare in your area. For less money, perhaps consider ordering directly either from Optimara or from one of the specialty growers because you would possibly have a better chance of getting something less likely to have pests. The seed trays I got were under $10 each, and can be found for even less, I bought mine at a higher priced garden center. The long, narrow rectangular shape holds quite a lot, plus they are vented. I don't recall which thread where someone posted a photo of the exact same trays I got. Perhaps Diana remembers. Some people in my AV club also use clear plastic shoe boxes. The round cake boxes never worked for me, but that was before I joined the forum, so I did not open them to ventilate, so things rotted. Having trays where you can lift the domes off is easier, soil does not get tossed around as much, they are stable on the counter or floor. Diana, you wrote that you separated some suckers from new plants, that is a kindness to the plant! You wrote: I also took 2 suckers from it so I have 3 of them (why?). Comments (1)I hope someone has an answer for you. I'd also be curious. Remember, honey bees don't have a long life expectancy, so your dead ones didn't necessarily die as a result of anything in your yard, even though they happened to be in your yard when they died. I'd keep the plant for now. Martha...See MoreScored on plants big time at the box store!
Comments (8)Hey SPF, I was there today and did the same thing you did. The reason HD doesn't do it is that they don't OWN the plants, they RENT the space on consignment so they couldn't care less if the plants die or not, or get sold. Lowe's, on the other hand, owns the stuff and wants to make what they can on it.... I still have an HRC in a bucket for you but I don't see where the maters are growing...I have five of them that are 75 days old and only 8" tall! Thought I'd wait a few more weeks to see if they are worth messing with or not. Tom...See MoreWhat am I missing? Buying from big box stores
Comments (9)I have no personal opinion on this, but I have heard of people who have had their orders completely messed up by the HD/Lowes people, and it takes weeks to straighten out. That's probably one of the things you get with a window professional. Also, when I did my windows, both reps (from window stores) could immediately tell me when a window needed to be tempered glass, and when it had to be a fire escape compliant window. My architectural designer missed one of those...the window guy basically had to change that window to be compliant. My friend's architect missed one or two of the tempered windows. It's just like anything else...if you know what you're doing, and are OCD about double checking everything, then you're probably fine. If you're like me, and burnt out after trying to save money with an architectural designer, and want your actual build to be smoother, then you work with professionals, and hold them accountable when the order isn't right. In our area, prices are marked up quite a bit. By getting quotes from people 40-60 minutes away, the prices were much more comparable with the big boxes...good luck!...See Morefawnridge (Ricky)
