Kitchen cabinet and wood choices help (xpost in design dilemma)

We are trying to figure what color wood cabinets would look best in this space. Any suggestions?

The First photo shows the kitchen and living/dining area for thisopen floor plan area. Its a small L shaped kitchen near the back windows.

Second photo is close up of floor and border.

Third and fourth photos are some options we are considering but are open to other suggestions.

JMarino, I am not sure yet how dark will we go with floors but I do not think we will go much darker then the color we have. The tile will run in kitchen only. I did not include the original layout we have, but the kitchen is edged by the peninsula you see on the plan (which now is bearing wall) and the other floor that divides kitchen and dining room. Not sure yet what tile we will pick. I think it will depend on the material and color of the counter top we pick. We will be closing window in the kitchen (where the stove is on the plan) but have pretty big window (three in fact and they are on the south side) in the living room. Lots of light there but still we will be closing window in the kitchen. The plan is to run recessed light s, pendant light above peninsula. There will be a hood (most likely chimney like) over range. There will be cabinet over fridge. Plan was to have enclosed hood over the range but that plan just changed today when we bought hood (chimney wall mount hood-SS). So we will need to change that part of plan now.

depends on floor choice. tend to like the first set of options. but mostly with a hardwood floor. You have a lot of painted surfaces with cabinet picks....a good basic hardwood floor in a medium tone will anchor things. Do you know what you want ?

I think your cabinets are gorgeous and I disagree regarding there being too much wood if you use wood floors. It depends on the color. I have a LOT of wood in my condo - cabinets - cabinets in the dining area and large wall unit. I also have a wood table in the dining area. My wood (except for the table) is quarter sawn white oak in a medium honey tone. My wood floors are in the kitchen and I think they work beautiful with the wood. I deliberately chose a natural stain oak floor in a fairly innocuous narrow width plank so the floor didn't make a "statement" as I just wanted it for a background. These aren't the greatest photos as they were just quick snapshots but the wood floor is basically a warm blonde color - i.e. natural. This is a pretty good representation of the floor color and I actually used this chair to show the cabinet maker what color stain I wanted on my cabinets - he took the chair to duplicate the stain in his workshop. My table - just to illustrate there is a LOT of wood in my open plan home. This is not taken in my home FWIW. This is a pretty good representation of my cabinets - floor is probably over-exposed so it's lighter than in real life but I think it shows that wood cabinets play well with wood floors provided there is sufficient contrast - and my floors are fairly light and contrast with the cabinets in real life as well. Last picture is a bit darker (both floors and cabinets) that in real life but I added just to show how much wood I have in a fairly small space in terms of cabinetry. The tall cabinet in the first picture is a more accurate representation of the color of my cabinets which is warmer than they appear in the second picture.

well, you could always remove the chair rail. but yes, if you paint the walls, you'll have to pick the same color to carry out through those adjoining halls I think Pale Oak, , Smoke Embers, Nimbus, or Light pewter would all be lovely in your space. I'd also hang a nice piece of art here to tie in the pale aqua chairs, maybe to some pillows on the sofa w/those colors. the fireplace/mantle is way too traditional looking. I'd remove everything. if you want more Boho, try some zellige tile on the surround I love this selection^ or a cement tile with natural wood mantle or, do more of a modern surround w/a marble tile at the very least, do a diff surround w/out the fluting

The darker one is a better match for the floor, but I would be concerned that it would make the kitchen very dark, particularly because it's small. Perhaps someone here could suggest a lighter alternative that would still go well with your beautiful floor.

do you have a plan?...too many dark cabinets [ wall, in particular] will close it in.....altho I like the java-dark!! consider dark bases with good toe kicks and maybe lighter wall cabinets or glass doors on wall cabinets or very few wall cabinets. Really depends on your plan.... I think If you want a cabinet dense kitchen I'd consider quartersawn oak in a honey or spice finish.....what other furnishings do you have..with the double hung windows I'm seeing a transitional style-is that what you have...blend of furnishings?? It would suit me to have the kitchen finishes an extension of the things in the foreground, rather than a lot of contrast...stay basic....medium stain colors I guess would be my first option. Gpod Luck..small kitchens can be so wonderful...find a few really special touches.

I hope you don't mind- I'm going to offer more advice than you are looking for.....

I would go with the dark top one; however, I would not do any uppers. Use open shelving with metal brackets (brass, nickel, silver not black) white counters, marble would look great and a back splash that is white also, MOPearl or marble that goes either all the way up or at least to the bottom shelf.

As much as I like the dark ones, I fear a cave like atmosphere without a lot of white reflective surfaces.

Spend an hour or two looking through Houzz. I think you'll find many kitchens with oak floors and a wide variety of cabinet choices. Personally I would avoid the Dark Java -- it will scream "2015" the same way that pinkish whitewashed oak screams "1989". I think you should look at quartersawn oak in a natural finish so that its not too dark. Are you looking for a early 1900s mission/arts & crafts/craftsman style or something traditional or something modern? I've seen photos of quarter sawn oak in a shaker style cabinet that look terrific. Or, the other direction is painted cabinets which also would look really good with the heavy grain of your floor.
