Comments (11)thank you for your input ladies ... I have these chairs which I love and I've been trying to find a table to go with them. My friend is giving me this table which I think may work the only problem is that it's oval. I will test drive it and get your opinion, after Thanksgiving (since all my in-laws are in town now). Kjmama: what's your address LOL ;-D Juddgirl2: I still want a farm house table, but I'm hoping this would work so I can get my chairs out of the garage :-D If I find a better table later, I will switch....See MoreAre oval dining tables passé?
Comments (36)Most table shapes have been around forever. I was going to say that boat-shape tops look very 1960's to me because that's what my parents had, but variation of those are still around, too. To me the specifics of the legs/bases, wood and finishes are more likely to place a table in a particular date range than the basic shape of the top. There are exceptions, of course. Some antiques and reproductions have edge treatments that definitely point to a particular time. Unconventional designs can scream a particular date, too. I wish I could find a picture of a dining table I saw when we were house hunting. The house had been reconfigured to meet the entertainment needs of the now deceased owners. Everything was obviously expensive, and much of it was over-the-top tacky. The dining table was a hoot. Eight chrome arms snaked out from the base. Each supported a separate glass circle giving the diners their own individual tables. Now that's a table shape whose time has come and gone!...See MoreAntique oval table from England

Being from the US my immediate thought was that the OP was also here and not in Australia. Please future posters could you state where you are from at least the region of the world. The term Loo Table does not mean that it was used to play cards but yes they could be oval as an easy search discovered this morning as I was satisfying my curiosity. "Loo table is a table model from the 18th and 19th centuries, originally designed for the card game loo, which was also known as lanterloo. The typical loo table has an oval or round top, and a hinged mechanism fitted to a pedestal base, enabling the table to be easily stored when not in use." Notice the mention of an oval top....See Morebriggy
