antique octagon sewing table
Comments (3)Holy Cow! I have one of those! I've never seen a table like mine before and didn't know until this moment that it was a sewing table. I found my table at a second-hand furniture/antiques shop and thought it breathtakingly charming. The octagon shaped top/lid is inlaid with various exotic woods, and inside there are 9 sections for notions. Each section has a lid that lifts off and each section and lid is numbered 1 through 9, and the lids only fit on their correspondingly numbered section. There in a large, inverted cone-shaped section in the middle that is 14 to 15 inches deep. Finally, the tri-legged base in quite elaborately carved with ball and claw feet. I am so excited to have read about your table. Now I can begin the fun of researching it!...See Moreoval foyer table - how to accessorize
Comments (9)A tall mirror (perhaps an oval one to echo the shape of the table or even round?) on the wall -- OR a series of antique prints in matching dark wood frames? Add a lamp! Always welcoming in a front entrance! IF there is room -- perhaps move the table back into the corner slightly -- consider adding a dark wood antique chair with a gorgeous fabric cushion? Comments (14)Absolutely lovely! I covet the brick walls; what a great backdrop for the plants. I can only imagine keeping that much gravel weed-free and out of the grass, however. I hope that someone has an idea of an ID for the creamy yellow spikes of flowers with iris-like foliage that are in the fifth photo as well as several others....See MoreSmall Oval Table - How Old?
Comments (19)I suspect you are confusing American Empire with French Empire perhaps? American Empire was characterized by ogee molding and a top overhanging 2 drawers, curled or bun feet, fiddle shaped back splats on chairs, inlay ornamentation> There was a style that looked vaguely "Empire" popular in the early 1900's that was heavier in appearance than Empire and made with lots of oak veneer. Veneer was not often used in the earlier period on the arms and legs of furniture nor on curved drawer fronts. When it was used it was on flat surfaces and the veneer was 1/8 of an inch thick, or more. Herre are some pictures....with a little slop over into Duncan Phyfe....which was not far behind Empire. https://www.google.com/search?q=american+empire+side+table&rlz=1C2PQHB_enUS634US634&biw=1280&bih=891&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjL3KqPlvjLAhXMQyYKHTv-A3AQ_AUIBygC#tbm=isch&q=american+empire+furniture...See Moremaifleur01
